Being Mormon But Not Lds

Is it possible to be a Mormon but not a Latter-Day Saint? I saw this mentioned somewhere around here.

Really there is no such thing as the Mormon Religion, you are only LDS, which is called Mormon.

I don't see how you can be one with out the other?

Maybe whomever said that is part of one of the break away churches they refer to themselves as "Mormons" too.

You may be right about that Jen. FLDS for instance do refer to themselves as "Mormons" but of course they are not part of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Yes I think that one can be Mormon and not LDS. generally a Mormon is someone who believes that Joseph Smith is a prophet and in the book of Mormon and other Mormon ideas. However like others have said there are those who are not LDS that fall into this category. So I think it is safe to say that all LDS are Mormons but not all Mormons are LDS. I have known many non-LDS Mormons who get kind of offended when they are not referred to a Mormons.

Is LDS strictly a connotation for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day saints, or are their other break offs that claim this Abbreviation? I am not sure.

Rather off topic, but... Can one be a Mormon but not an LDS (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints) member and still participate in LDS deep doctrine? Are their significant differences between the main Church and the off shoots to make this distinction?

It is the same as saying you are "Christian" but not necessarily "Catholic" or "Protestant", but you believe in the Bible and Christ. I do have concerns about those who announce such with regards to the use of our Boards though, because the intent of their Discussion is often confusing.

LDS is just for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

Others that are break offs of our church use different versions either RLDS or FLDS.


I don't see how people can Claim to be Mormon? To be mormon is to be part of the Mormon Church? There is only one Mormon Church which is called LDS.

FLDS might have the same believes as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints, but I don't see how they can claim to be Mormon?

It probably more is a label given on the LDS church more then others, but thats point. I can't just claim to be Catholic because I believe in the bible and I have similar views. That just doesn't work.

Of they want to be called something they should go by FMormon or Rmormon.
