Of all the things that can make a person see red, school principal Gail Karwoski was not expecting parents to get huffy about, well, seeing red. advertisement At Daniels Farm Elementary School in Trumbull, Conn., Karwoski's teachers grade papers by giving examples of better answers for those students who make mistakes. But that approach meant the kids often found their work covered in red, the color that teachers long have used to grade work. Parents objected. Red writing, they said, was 'stressful." The principal said teachers were just giving constructive advice and the color of ink used to convey that message should not matter. But some parents could not let it go. https://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7374218/ |
This is really too much! What in the world ..? The color is too stressful?
This last paragraph is the key, though, in my opinion:

"I don't think changing to purple or green will make a huge difference if the teaching doesn't go along with it," Jones said. "If you"re just looking at avoiding the color red, the students might not be as frightened, but they won't be better writers." |
Offtopic but, I don't mind corrections or suggestions, no matter what color, so long as the teacher is actually correct... but that's another topic. |
You know, that's alot of extra work to not only correct a students writing, but to provide better answers. I would think that parents would be a little more appreciative. I swear, the school finally does something right and now the parents are messing it up, but I really wonder how many parents were moaning and groaning, I bet it was just a few loud people speaking for a bunch of others that didn't really care. A red smiley face is just as nice as a blue one, and a blue correction stinks just as bad as a red one.

My daughter's 4th grade teacher does not use a red pen at all. He instead used a black marker. I am not sure if it is for this reason. What I can say is that regardless of the color, I review any markings on my daughter's papers. My concern isn't heightened or lessened by the color that they are made in. Too many parents these days are too superficial about their kids, and it causes teachers to lose more and more control of the school environment. Next we'll be hearing that a teacher's voice is too deep or too intimidating. Why not build robots to teach? Sorry, rant off.
As a teacher I use red or green ink when correcting papers, the only reason I use these colors is because I want to highlight the good and bad points of an exam, if I use black or blue ink it does not highligh as good as the other colors (I have tried it in the past). I think the issue here is that the parents are unhappy about their child's performance. It is not about the ink color at all, but an issue of "It is not that my child is not good at school, the problem is in the ink" I think when parents behave this way they leave a very negative impression in the child because if the kid is facing some self-esteem issues, blaming the teacher for the color of the ink he/she uses, is not going to help.
