Now that Arafat is deteriorating in health and may soon die, one has to wonder if the new person to fill his shoes will cause things to be more contentious or will it be abated. Arafat was often accused of being too 'nice' with Israel.
The rumor is that he has met with a panel of 3 people, the names of which have not been stated, to discuss handing over the power of the military, etc. To be honest, over the past few years, Arafat himself has been less and less imposing in his speeches and actions. It would be interesting to see what a change in power will bring to the Palestine state, and the conflict between them and Israel.
U.S. IS LOOKING BEYOND ARAFAT
As Yasser Arafat neared death on Thursday, U.S. policymakers were privately, and very quietly, assessing the prospect that his departure could help breathe new life into the long-stalled Middle East peace process.

I hope it does. However, there is a rumor that Israel poisoned Arafat somehow. I don't really know how they could have done it, but if it is discovered that he had been poisoned, the peace process won't be any closer...
Is this a test?
WIFE SAYS ARAFAT IS REALLY OK, RIPS AIDES
Yasser Arafat's wife said her husband is "all right" and lashed out at his top lieutenants early today, accusing them of traveling to Paris with plans to "bury" him "alive."

Palestinian leader Arafat dies at 75
Quote from CNN.com
QUOTE |
Palestinian Authority President Yasser Arafat died early Thursday at a French military hospital where he was being treated for a blood disorder, Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erakat said. Arafat, 75, was taken to the suburban Paris hospital nearly two weeks ago for treatment. He had been on a respirator since slipping into a coma November 3. A hospital spokesman said he died at 9:30 p.m. Wednesday ET |
It's the end of an era for Palestine. I fear what comes next. The fact that Arafat was "too friendly" with Israel means that his successor will not be. I believe he stood in the way of more violence for quite a long time.
There were requests to bury him in Jerusalem, but Israel balked at that. There has been a compromise to bury him at the Ramallah compound where he spent the past three years. Either way, I expect there will be some kind of violence. I've also read where the appointed person to replace him will be a member of the Palestinian Parliament (Abbas?) for 60 days until elections can be held. Also read where that law will be changed to allow someone else to be elected or appointed right away.
I pray that rationality will prevail, but, of course, "rationality" is a subjective idea.

EDITORIAL: NOW THAT ARAFAT IS GONE
Squandered opportunities. That, unfortunately, will be the lasting epitaph for Yasser Arafat. He had a chance, with his unique spot in history as the unquestioned leader of the Palestinians, to guide his people toward statehood, democracy and freedom. Yet he failed.
