Palestine Statehood Who Is Right? Should Palestine be its own soverign nation state? Why is the USA attempt to block this from happening? Is Israel using an apartheid system much like South Africa did where people are segregated into undesirable areas and become unable to access the basic necessities of life? Does Israel have a point that they have major security challenges against those trying to harm them? How can this be resolved or will it ever? Will there be a Palestine state?

They just put the terrorists in charge of all the decisions made for their "country." How will the rest of the world deal with this, I wonder? The U.S. and others have made it clear, and rightly so, that they will not "treat" with terrorists. This is a disaster.

How Israel and the United States Helped to Bolster Hamas

As Hamas wins an upset victory in the Palestinian parliamentary elections, we take a look at the little-known rise of the militant group with investigative journalist Robert Dreyfuss, author of the new book "Devil's Game: How the United States Helped Unleash Fundamentalist Islam." In it, Dreyfuss reveals how the U.S. looked the other way when Israel's secret service supported the creation of Hamas.

There might be some positive aspects to Hamas gaining power (after all, we have to remain optimistic in the pursuit of peace right?)...

Firstly, throughout history there have been political parties formed out of 'terrorist' organisations - remember, the difference between state violence and terrorism is merely one of resources and legitimacy (I.e. holding the monopoly of violence). We can look to Northern Ireland, Sri Lanka and South America for examples of this. Admittedly groups such as Sinn Fein (for instance) had a definite split between their political and military wings which Hamas lacks but that doesn't mean that Hamas can't be drawn into the process of legitimate politics.

Secondly, as the current experience in Iraq shows, the population of a nation needs to believe in the people in power. Fatah (sp?) had years to try and win this support from the people of Palestine and never managed it. Hamas enjoy incredible support over there and are seen as the 'good guys' - organising food, education, etc that international NGOs often fail to provide. Having this reservoir of popularity may allow Hamas more room for maneuverability in its dealings with Israel. Mahmood Abbas, in an interview with Channel 4 News recently, was making lots of encouraging noises about the development of the peace process.

I agree entirely that Hamas will have to drop it's attitude of denial toward the state of Israel and reign in those members engaged in terrorist activity (although it must be noted that their election was not won on a particularly anti-Israeli platform but more one of social provision) but Israel must do it's part too - to swallow hard and try and get over its distaste for engaging constructively with its enemies... and the end of the day it will take both groups to acheive any kind of lasting settlement in the region.

I was listening to Glenn Beck this afternoon, and he brought up an excellent point about Hamas gaining the majority in Palestine. Now Hamas is "legitimate", in power within a nation-state. If they continue their normal acts, they do so as a nation-state. Then those acts are acts of war. And Israel will wage real, declared war against a nation-state.

The "humble, peace-loving" Palestinian Arabs have proclaimed that they support the use of terror (as in snipers killing 18 month-old babies, bombers blowing themselves up in nursery schools, etc) by this action.

Yes, some good may come from this action. The Palestinians have shown their true colors, and will reap the consequences of their choices.

Perhaps then... and this is only speculation in its purest form... one can deduct that Israel and the US did help Hamas come to power in the hope of waging a war against Palestine which can be considered 'legal' by the rest of the world. If they did it the other way then it would seem like mighty Israel is just bullying their weaker defenseless neighbor. On another note, we will have to see if a literal army will be formed. I am sure there will be stipulations made about what they can and cannot do, but as you know... who can tell Hamas what they can or cannot do.

It is interesting to not that all of this happens when the Prime Minister is basically incapacitated and elections were on the edge. Maybe this will lead to a hardline government being reinforced in Israel.

Israel Regrouping After Surprise Hamas Win

After the enormity of the Hamas win - 76 of 132 parliament seats - became apparent Thursday, Acting Prime Minister Ehud Olmert instructed normally talkative Cabinet ministers not to speak to the media without permission. After a three-hour emergency session of the Security Cabinet, he issued a brief statement that Israel would not negotiate with a Palestinian government that includes Hamas ministers.
