Interesting that the transfer of power cannot be peaceful, but the exiting party insists on having their voices heard -- with rocks, guns, and bombs.

Violence Erupts in Wake of Hamas Election Victory
By Laura King, Times Staff Writer
GAZA CITY -- Street clashes erupted in the Gaza Strip today in the wake of the militant Islamist group Hamas' overwhelming victory in Palestinian parliamentary elections, raising the specter of a wider outbreak of violence during the coming transition of power.
Thousands of activists from the defeated Fatah movement torched cars outside the Palestinian parliament building in the center of Gaza City, fired shots into the air and chanted angry slogans denouncing their own leaders, whom they blame for the party's stunning loss after four decades of unchallenged rule.
...In a separate confrontation today near the town of Khan Younis in the south of Gaza, loyalists from Fatah and Hamas faced off in a battle that escalated from stone-throwing to an exchange of gunfire. Three people were reported injured.
The clashes were neither as large nor as lethal as other episodes of unrest that have gripped Gaza in recent months since Israeli forces unilaterally withdrew. But today's tumult boded ill for a peaceful handover by Fatah of governing control - with all the material privileges it affords - to Hamas.
HAMAS, FATAH CLASH IN GAZA
Militants from Fatah and Hamas capped a tense and emotional day with violent clashes on Friday, while a Hamas leader said the group had no intention of recognizing Israel's right to exist or changing its charter, which calls for Israel's destruction.

JIMMY CARTER: GIVE HAMAS A CHANCE
Hamas deserves to be recognized by the international community, and despite the group's militant history, there is a chance the soon-to-be Palestinian leaders could turn away from violence, former President Jimmy Carter said Wednesday.

Well, Mr. Sharon pulled people out of Gaza and turned it over to the Arabs a few months ago. This was supposed to lead to more peace in the region.
Here is some of the REAL consequences of his action:

Israel hands over £30m to Palestinian Authority
Israel has handed over 250 million shekels (£30m) in frozen tax and customs revenues collected on behalf of the Palestinian Authority. But it insisted that further monthly payments would depend on what kind of government emerged from Hamas's surprise parliamentary election victory.

Its a start. I don't think people in this country, ones that don't watch truly independent news, realize just how violent and usurping that Israel is. Most don't realize that Israel gave that land to the Palestinians for "peace" then proceeded with an illegal occupation after the creation of the Palestinian state. Sharon was pulling out his military because it was an occupation and colonization of the Palestinian state. By moving in troops, then building housing for Jews in Palestinian territory, he invited recourse. Colonization and occupation of a state do no signify that you want peace, I signifies your refusal to accept the state you gave them. Its says you are your own country, but we still own you. Understanding those circumstances, which the Israeli PR machine keeps from the American public, you can start to see why the violence won't end. But I'm not foolish, naive, or blind, I understand that both parties are equally to blame in this conflict. Israel is just the most recent to start things up again. In fact, innocent children die by Israeli guns very often in Palestine. They are the stores briefly passed over and made to look like the kids brought it on themselves by being in the street when the plans flew over their houses. Israel often attacks known residential areas to "make a point", per the former prime ministers mouth. You cannot justify Israels actions with comments like that.
Unfortunately most people in the US who do not seek out independant news sources see a very biased view of the conflict. Israel is villified for trying to protect it's citizens against a people who are kept in abject poverty and in a state of attack by their own leaders. The hatred that the Palestinians have for the Israeli's goes beyond any rational measure. It is the same hatred that the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem spouted during WW II. There is a reason why the Arabs were on the side of the Third Reich, and it had nothing to do with the Palestinian territory. Desiring the death of an entire nation is ridiculous, esp when the nation in question was formed at the same time as a Palestinian state could have been formed, had they agreed with the lines drawn up the League of Nations in '47. Instead, the Arabs there went to war, and they were beat back. To suggest that Israel capitulate now, after winning war after war in which they were not the aggressor, is more foolish then suggesting that the US give back North America to the Native Americans.
