Palestine Statehood Who Is Right? Should Palestine be its own soverign nation state? Why is the USA attempt to block this from happening? Is Israel using an apartheid system much like South Africa did where people are segregated into undesirable areas and become unable to access the basic necessities of life? Does Israel have a point that they have major security challenges against those trying to harm them? How can this be resolved or will it ever? Will there be a Palestine state?

Palestine vs. Israel - Page 40

In my view, Sharon put Israel at tremendous further risk. By capitulating on the Gaza Strip, forcing the settlers to leave, he proved to the Palestinians that terror wins. Thus, Hamas became the popular leaders of Palestine.

The Palestinian "government" has no intention of ever living peacefully with Israel. Since they now know that terror tactics work on Israel, we can expect to see a lot more missiles, bombings, and assassinations in Israel.

IMO.

I disagree with this assessment. Had Fatah not been so corrupt (their own fault) and also hamstrung by Israel/US pressure (not their fault) then they may have gained enough support over the course of their tenure to retain power. You have to remember Israel had Palestine's most popular leader under house arrest for ages just before he died. How can you expect any party to function like that? The Fatah party didn't ask for him to be illegally imprisoned. And during the tenure of Fatah, far more Palestinians were murdered by the Israel Army than vice versa, this is obviously going to fuel discontent.

The Gaza Strip is being illegally occupied by Israel, so is the West Bank. This is widely recorecognizedevery country in the world except Israel and the US. It is one of the major causes of all this resentment. I am not suggesting for one second that the Palestinians are innocent and haven't played their part in this bloody conflict. They have also contributed to the situation by using hideous acts terrorism on Israel. However, perhaps Sharon came to realise that you cannot have peace through oppression.

If the Palestinian Government, and they are the democratically elected government, has no intention of living peacefully with Israel, then I cannot see them in power for very long. Likewise, if the Kadima party is not interested in peace it will also be ousted. Let's leave politics out of this. The people are fed up with all the bloodshed, the overwhelming majority want peace on both sides.

But I must ask you what your opinion is on all these checkpoints and Israel-only roads in the West bank. How can division and prejudice possibly promote harmony?

Well, well, isn't this interesting. No one is willing to help the Hamas save for one specific country: Russia. Are we surprised? What are they expecting out of this?

Russia has offered to bail out Palestine's financially troubled Hamas government, raising the spectre of a confrontation with the United States and the European Union.

Russia, in my opinion, will and has always been there for those countries who are enemies of the US, because they want to form these coalitions should another World War break out. Russia has never gotten over the Cold War, and though they seem innocent and simple outsiders looking in, they clearly have their own agenda. Helping Hamas when everyone else has backed out is a clear sign of this.

Iran pledges $50 million to Palestinians

Iran will give the Palestinian Authority $50 million and urged other Muslim countries to follow suit, Iran's top diplomat said Sunday.

So, to recap, Russia and Iran are now funding Hamas and Palestine. Iran and Russia were in cohorts before with Russia providing, or promising to provide uranium-enriching rods. So is this the new coalition against the Western world?

Palestine vs. Israel

There has been much speculation on this topic about the reasons for Hamas coming to power. Some have suggested it is because Palestinians support terrorism, others, including myself, have speculated there were other reasons at play.

I saw a report on SBS's Dateline program that asked these questions to real Palestinians. The responses were very interesting.

They include: Hamas running a large network of charity, Fatah's corruption and also the perception that negotiating with Israel has yielded nothing.

You can watch the full report at the link below.

The women of Hamas

Hamas oversees a network of charitable organisations that run schools, hospitals and other services and have established a reputation for being efficient and corruption-free. Huda Naim is a graduate of the Hamas-run Islamic University of Gaza.

HUDA NAIM, (Translation): Hamas organisations showed high standards of transparency, cleanliness and administrative and academic capabilities. The Islamic University, the health organisations in Gaza, for instance, are excellent examples of the future Palestinian Authority under Hamas's leadership.
While these institutions, like this Hamas-affiliated hospital, demonstrated the party's administrative credentials, it was its outreach programs that provided Hamas with the grassroots network to lock in the women's vote.

HUDA NAIM, (Translation): We had within the organisation an army of women who liaised with ordinary women in society. They did so on a personal level. On family occasions, Hamas women in the area supported women in the neighbourhood. This translated positively during elections.

INTISAR AL-WAZIR, FATAH MP (Translation): They are very organised. They were able to reach out to women through financial assistance, especially as our society is in a state of poverty. More than 70% of our people live below the poverty line.

For many Palestinians - men and women - the deciding factor in the election was the conflict with Israel. The perception is that Fatah negotiated with Israel and got less than nothing in return, while the armed resistance of Hamas forced the Israelis to withdraw from Gaza.

INTISAR AL-WAZIR FATAH MP: The former policy pursued by the Authority and Fatah - the policy of peace - was met from the Israeli side with continuous aggression, confiscation of land, building of the wall, expansion of settlements, assassination of individuals and leaders by Apache helicopters, and failure to recognise the Authority as a partner. All this played a part - the harsh economic conditions - all this meant the assistance Hamas gave to the people won them over to its side.

I would like to ask people why they believe countries should stop supporting Palestinians financially?

Won't this just fuel terrorism? One of the best ways to alleviate terrorism is through providing poor people with a future and an economy. Palestine is one of the poorest countries in the world. An ironic twist when you compare its wealth to that of its occupiers. Economic sanctions never weakened Saddam, but instead led to the deaths of millions of Iraqis. Should we adopt similar policies for Palestine because Israel and the US doesn't like their government?

Offtopic but,
I don't think Russia has any interest in forming coalitions to fight the Americans. The Cold War ended a long time ago and this was because Russia imploded, contrary to the belief it was the US who won the war. Russia has many links to oil rich countries in the Middle East. It has been an ally of Iraq and Iran in the past and benefitted through trade. There is nothing wrong with this, the US is an ally of Saudi Arabia for the same reasons. The Russians could argue many cases where the US has supported certain countries in that region for geo-political reasons, which compromised Russia's goals.

Suicide bomber kills 9 in Tel Aviv
1st attack in Israel since Hamas took over government

QUOTE
A Palestinian suicide bomber today killed at least nine people and wounded more than 60 others, six of them seriously, in an explosion in a crowded section of Tel Aviv as Israelis celebrated the fifth day of the Passover holiday

The Islamic Jihad and Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades terror groups took responsibility for today's attack. Both groups are openly funded by Iran. Al Aqsa is the military wing of Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah party

So much for Hamas wanting everyone to take them seriously.

It is not going to stop and with the recent funding from the countries spoken of earlier we are never going to see the end of bloodshed:

QUOTE
Teenage Killer

A youthful Islamic Jihad activist blew himself up outside a crowded falafel bar in Tel Aviv yesterday, killing at least nine civilians and wounding about 50. Samer Samih Hamad, from the West Bank village of Arakeh, near the pre-1967 border, is believed to be one of the youngest suicide bombers ever dispatched by a Palestinian group. In a video "living will", he dedicated the operation to the thousands of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails. Dressed in black with a yellow headband inscribed with Koranic verses, he warned in a clear, firm voice: "There are many other bombers on the way." Relatives said he had completed high school. But he looked more like a boy.
