Maybe it is better for the two of them to just declare themselves eternal enemies and live life to suit rather to have this constant love hate relationship.

Palestinian Authority President Mahmud Abbas is suspending "all contacts" with Israel to protest against Israeli action in Gaza. |
Unfortunately, the Israelis really do not have a true bargainning partner. President Abbas is truly not in charge of all the various factions within what makes up Palestinians. You can only have a peace treaty with groups that are not having peace. It would be like the US engaging in discussions with Bin Laden and expecting all terrorism to go away.
However, cutting off essentials will not be tolerated by the UN and will really look bad publically. If true, this really will be a short term thing...no way does it go on very long as it would be a public relations nightmare.
There really needs to be 2 partners at the table that represent the entire party sitting at the table. Palestinians seriously need to come to the realization that the Israelis are not going any where...so a variant of the UN Partition Plan of '57 or the deal that was almost inked with the help of Bill Clinton's Administration is as good as it is going to get. I still cannot believe that they did not agree to the Clinton deal. Militarily, if that deal goes through and the Palestinians one day decide to attack the Israelis...a lot of prime defensible land would at that point be in the Palestinian hands and the Israelis would be in a pretty bad spot.
