Occasionally I have written that placing women in physically demanding jobs in the military, as for example combat, is stupid and unworkable. Predictably I've gotten responses asserting that I hate women, abuse children, cannibalize orphans, and can't get a date. A few, with truculence sometimes amplified by misspelling, have demanded supporting data.
OK. The following are from documents I found in a closet, left over from my days as a syndicated military columnist ("Soldiering", Universal Press Syndicate). Note the dates: All of this has been known for a long time.

I don't see anything wrong with women in the military but I think our role has to be brief. For instance missions should be in and out not long winded because we do have certain things that need to be taken care of monthly. I also don't think women should be part of a remote group where they can be a target of rape by other soldiers because that is still an issue.

I can honestly tell you that some of the women in the military are tougher than the men. They put a lot of drive into what they do so you tend to expect better from them than some of the guys I used to work with.

The ladies and get down just as well as the guys because in modern warfare who has bigger muscles isn't as important as how to shoot your weapon and not be shot at.
