I agree that convicted felons should be allowed a chance to get a job but what job is also important. I wouldn't feel comfortable knowing my teacher raped or murdered someone. I don't think I'd be able to get over that.
I have no problem working along side a felon. I think that once the paid for their crimes then that is it. However there are some jobs that they should not be in. Teacher is one of those jobs. We hold these people up as members of society and granted they do wrong at times too. When they are caught just like others they can no longer teach. We need good people with good moral standards to teach our youth.
If you want to help our kids then get into working with them. Let them see how life is for those who led a life of crime and paid for it. Help them not go down the road you did. I know there are programs out there that you can help the kids with. Let them learn from your mistakes.

Comments: I am a convicted felon and my passion is to work with children. I do not have any violence on my record. I think sometimes we just get caught up some how and even if we not at fault but the judge still smacks a felony on you do your time and then when we get out our future is bleak. I love working with children it is my passion 2 to 4 yr old. I have over 12 years experience and I can't see myself doing anything else.

Comments: [unnecessary Removed] people with one prior felony and you want to eliminate them from doing something like substitute teaching... As long as the nature of their release into the wild doesn't contradict the job they are seeking thank they have EVERY right. They live every day without the same rights we do and if they screw up again the punishment is all the more severity. Moral issues are a waste of time, what you think matters not the slightest when it comes to legislation, good luck writing a bill that will stick cutting out the possibility of hiring a prior felon.

Comments: First of all, I want to say that I think it's great that people are having this discussion. Because, I just graduated from college with my bachelor's and I am having some difficulties trying to find a job. When I was 17 some friends and I decided to wreak havoc on society by shooting paintball guns at cars and signs. Little did we know, we were being followed be the police. Because of the damage to one car, we were charged with state-jail felonies. I went to jail for a YEAR. I am nothing like most of the people I was locked away with and I will everything I can to never go back. I grew up in church and I have very good values, I respect women, children, elder's. I don't steal, cheat, and I hate to lie although in this society you almost have to. I used to think that when I got out of jail it would be the best day of my life and it was a great day, I thought that I had paid my debt, and I thought that I was a better more mature person because of it. Now I am truly convinced that no matter what, I will be judged, condemned, and excluded as long as I live. Thank the Lord, that this life is only temporary! I love America, but...

Comments: I am a convicted felon. I taught school many years ago before I was convicted. I can not teach again. Is this right or fair? I guess it is up to the Perfect society that we live in. Those of you who never been in trouble, which it seems like a lot, really have not a clue..A felon is striped of almost everything society has to offer..Yes we made a mistake but I can say this. When I was a teacher I worked along side drunks, cheaters, even a teacher who liked sleeping with the football team. Now, I guess not all of us are felons until we are caught and proven guilty. Judging a class of people is easy. What is going to happen when the World flips and the majority is felons.
Bill, I agree with you in the fact that if a person has been convicted and have paid their debt they should have the opportunity to live a normal life and hold a job. HOWEVER, I believe there are certain crimes (sexual in nature against children) where I have a different opinion. It is my view, that those who sexually abused children should NOT have contact, jobs or activities involving children. It is my personal view (and cases seem to support that) that these convicted felons are likely to commit that sort of crime again. I don't think the risk should be taken.

Comments: I, personally, think you should not judge a book by its background check! I am a convicted felon over something someone else did. I could not sit around in jail and let someone else raise my child so I did what my public defender told me to do, pleading as accessory to the felony crime to get out and take care of my daughter. I've been a CNA all of my life, and now I cannot work in nursing. I have always wanted to be an English teacher, or a counselor. Now my life is literally ruined and I have become a burden on the economy. I can barely provide for myself and my daughter. This is all over something someone else did. I just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. I believe, personally, that I have been labeled. Not every felon should be allowed to teach, no. Violent crimes, sex crimes, etc would not be someone to trust your children to. Every case, however, is different. What of those people who really want to make a positive difference in the life of a child, and want to better our education system altogether? Doesn't anyone believe in second chances these days?
