Diablana, I hope things get better for you and your daughter. In my view, I don't have a problem with convicted felons teaching, my only issue is that I do not agree that those with a history of sexual abuse and violent related crimes should be allowed to be around kids. The risk is too great. However, I believe in second chances for everyone else. Wishing you the best!
How low are we on teachers that we require criminals to teach our children. I think this whole idea is flawed and wonder how this came about as a valid practice, can't they do something else.

Comments: There is a difference in misdemeanors and felonies. They absolutely should not be allowed to work in school system. Had the same problem in our area and not one person stood up for our children until now and I am.
Now I have a question, should a person be allowed to work in the school system even as a janitor if they have been arrested and charged but never convicted of carnal knowledge of a juvenile and then aggravated r-pe?
I would not want a person who has been charged but not convicted of possible s-xual misconduct with a minor working around children or even teens. He might work hard for a while but just how is he getting his jollies and when if again will he strike?

Comments: I came across this site because I myself am looking for answers. I am a convicted felon with a drug case. I made the mistake as an 18 year old by getting involved with the wrong people because I was in a bad situation at the time. I'm 22 years old now and I have done my time for my crime. I'm currently working a full time job and am a full time student seeking a career in elementary education. I love working with kids and I used to work with kids as a preschool teacher before I caught my charge. Yes I'm a felon and yes I made a mistake but I'm still human and should have every opportunity to succeed in life as everyone else does. Some people don't understand why felons keep going back to prison, and some don't want to try, but some arent given the opportunity to prove themselves. I don't believe that just because you've made a mistake you should have to pay for it for the rest of your life. Like I said I did my time, that was the past, and now I'm moving towards my future. To those of you who say I cant be a teacher, my words to you are this...no matter what you say or think of me I will become a teacher because it is my dream not yours and I don't care if you don't like it. I'm a very intelligent and responsible adult just trying to better myself and my future and I refuse to let anyone or anything stand in my way of accomplishing my goals. Thank you and have a nice day!

Comments: It amazes me how judgmental people are. 1 in 15 Americans has a felony record. Some felons did no more than 3 months in jail. For crimes such as possession of stolen property. You people are right. These hardened criminals are a threat to the Amurikan way of life.
You haters are the problem. A person can be a pillar of society their entire lives, but a single bad choice gives them a label that they can never shake. Some felons go on to own their own businesses, own homes, have families with children. They want nothing more than to make the world a better place, but they've been labeled. No matter what they did with their lives before or after makes no difference to most of you. Judge not, lest ye be judged. Sound familiar.
Some felons have a felony record because they upset the wrong person. They burned the wrong bridge. The US justice system is flawed. In court in can come down to one persons word against another. If the accuser has millions of dollars and the the defendant doesn't, guess what. The one with out all the money is going to loose.

Comments: You are right. What happened in the past, is in the past. I know there are great people, who could become teachers. However they made one mistake in their lives, and must pay the rest of their lives! I know of a couple of people who were teachers and were arrested and convicted. One guy went through a divorce and went out drinking...he was charged with a D.W.I. Another guy caught his wife with another man. They fought and the teacher was charged with assault. Both were great teachers. They made one mistake and were forced to quit teaching, after two decades of being in the classroom. I don't believe sex offenders need to be around our students, but each case needs to be looked at individually. Good people need a second chance.
I think it should be based on a case by case interview on the type of crime and what they have done to make amends. For instance I definitely would not put anyone to teach that was convicted of sexual abuse, attempted murder, murder or something along those lines.
