Elderly Drivers Can Kill? - Page 2

And as Dierdre pointed out, if we take away their licenses and there is no reliable public transportation, how do they get where they need to go?  I don't live close enough to my parents to drive everywhere for them, and even if I did, they would hate that.  My mother is so independent!  But she is also 68 years old, and has recently been in an accident where she just didn't see the other car and pulled out in front of them.  My dad has macular degeneration and is losing the sight in one eye - age related event that cannot be treated.  he soon won't be able to drive, and probably should not now.

And who said that the elderly are not on drugs??  The elderly take more prescription drugs than any other group!  And more powerful different types at the same time...  It's a wonder to me that any of them are still functioning at all, let alone driving.

I have a real hard time with this topic, because I wonder how will I know when I'm not driving safely?  Will I be able to just give it up?  We in the U.S. are so dependent on our cars -- spoiled really.  It's going to be a harsh wake-up call when the oil runs out...

In my opinion

You tell them FarSeer! Quite often they down their prescriptions with a beer, or mid-morning cocktail too.

Perhaps what we need is a law that when a Dr. prescribes a drug that impairs driving, then he reports who he prescribed it to, what drug and when, and when they will no longer be taking said drug, to the DMV. Or would that be considered a violation of rights?

whom do we fear more? Elderly Drivers or Young Teenage Drivers?

The 17 to 25 year olds here are awful! They tailgate, pass on the right, whizz through the back streets going 50 mpg in 20 mpg zones.

The 60+year olds are just as bad too. What really, really bothers me are the elderly who sit so low in their seats that they are not looking OVER the steering wheel. Thus they can not see any thing directly in front of them. They are driving by the "Stars".

That is how the Post Office was caved in and the smaller of the two grocery stores. The women[ undecided.gif Yep, sad to say, it was women this time who smashed into the buildings] drivers were sitting so low that they could not see over the steering wheel.

We are so small of a town that we don't have a taxi. Twice it was tried, but they couldn't afford the insurance. There is one person who advertises that they will 'Escort' you to and from your appointments, shopping, etc. But I've been told that when you call you get a machine. Perhaps they are too busy.

Maybe what they should do is make the 17 to 25 year olds ride in the back seat of the cars driven by the 'Star' drivers for a month, and then reverse it.

In Oregon you renew your license every four years. If you do it before your birthdate you can do it by mail. You are allowed to do it by mail 4 times in a row. That is 16 years before you get a new picture and update the personal information! By some fluke when I went in to get my name changed and got a new picture, I paid $20.00 more and now I don't have to get my license renewed until 2014!!!! Any address changes I can do my mail and they send me a sticker to put on my license. Pretty handy, don't ya think? spock.gif Personally I would rather have to go in and get it renewed and possibly take a modified test.

I have thought long and hard on this issue as my parents are getting up there in age. Right now my father is 7 and he is doing great driving. HE still drives school bus for the local school district and I believe that if he was a not a safe driver they would not be allowing him to drive. My mother likes to take some of the elderly ladies who cannot drive any more and drive them to their appointments and to the stores. SHe just recently had her eyes worked on so I think she is still able to see fine. I just think soon I will take her license away as she is getting dangerous on the roadways. I think she drives too slow.
