And as Dierdre pointed out, if we take away their licenses and there is no reliable public transportation, how do they get where they need to go? I don't live close enough to my parents to drive everywhere for them, and even if I did, they would hate that. My mother is so independent! But she is also 68 years old, and has recently been in an accident where she just didn't see the other car and pulled out in front of them. My dad has macular degeneration and is losing the sight in one eye - age related event that cannot be treated. he soon won't be able to drive, and probably should not now.
And who said that the elderly are not on drugs?? The elderly take more prescription drugs than any other group! And more powerful different types at the same time... It's a wonder to me that any of them are still functioning at all, let alone driving.
I have a real hard time with this topic, because I wonder how will I know when I'm not driving safely? Will I be able to just give it up? We in the U.S. are so dependent on our cars -- spoiled really. It's going to be a harsh wake-up call when the oil runs out...
In my opinion

whom do we fear more? Elderly Drivers or Young Teenage Drivers? |
I have thought long and hard on this issue as my parents are getting up there in age. Right now my father is 7 and he is doing great driving. HE still drives school bus for the local school district and I believe that if he was a not a safe driver they would not be allowing him to drive. My mother likes to take some of the elderly ladies who cannot drive any more and drive them to their appointments and to the stores. SHe just recently had her eyes worked on so I think she is still able to see fine. I just think soon I will take her license away as she is getting dangerous on the roadways. I think she drives too slow.
