Comments: I am surprised at the number of people supporting Susan. I just watched this as a rerun on Dateline ID and have the complete opposite opinion. Susan did this for money and no doubt out of a willingness to help. I don't look down on her or the Kaplans for the way the child was conceived, in vitro is expensive and there are no guarantees. I believe Susan felt intercourse was a better option because it provided her more money and the Kaplans felt it was better because it was cheaper than IVF. She knew when she agreed to this it meant giving up the child. She took their money and assistance (living with them!). And I think the judge's choice was proved correct when she didn't visit the child after losing custody. And then to give her other children back to their fathers while she got her life back together? That is just wrong. Perhaps I feel for the Kaplans because I was raised by a single father when my mother too was more invested in her life than in the challenges of raising her children. And as an adult, I can empathize with their difficulty in conceiving since my husband and I have had to undergo fertility treatment. Believe me, if I believed him having second with a surrogate was our best option at having a child I wouldn't hesitate. And once that child was born, we would never stop fighting for him/her if we initially lost custody.

I am amazed by some the things people agree to but I know that couples that want to be parents badly will resort to some strange methods. There must be more to this case than simply what you get from the court case.

Comments: It's a sad situation all around. Susan's baby, the Kaplans and Susan herself. Dumb thing to enter into an oral agreement in the first thing with the Kaplans. When [all is] said and done I feel sorry for Susan. [..] It seems to me that greed and selfishness played a huge part in what happened here. Someday whats right and wrong will come to an end and true justice will prevail. In the meantime pride and guilt will have to be dealt with here on earth.
