Dungeons & Dragons 3.5 Create Characters For Play By Post - Page 19

Actually, JB, problem here I think.

I was going to do a very brief writeup on how to use the character generator, and
I just tried to make a character, and when you click Display Character, the page that comes up has form boxes on it, and their contents don't copy when you select the rest of the text and paste it - that's why we're getting some signups that have blank stats and + = but with skill levels and items all over them . There IS something wrong with the character maker. =/

It is not a matter of there is something wrong, it is a matter of convenience. It is natural that fields do not copy at the same time regular page content does. Whatever fields are missed, which is just a few, you can copy into the finished Character that you Post. In the Post the Player still has to format it right since all those + / - is just to show how the final figure was arrived (save for the bonuses). I will have a look to see if I should move those fields.

What I was trying to get across was the idea that the finished character that you Display should maybe be echoed as normal text, rather than into form boxes, so players can just select and copy and paste the "flat" text (such as Str: 14) into the Characters thread, which is much more convenient than having to look off of or copy each field from the specific form character sheet.

I could have sworn the Display Character allowed me to copy and paste all but maybe one or two things and paste it for a new character. Even just a page similar to the Save one which has a long list of the stats, but with Skill87 being replaced by the actual skill and ratings. When we post our guy into the characters thread, we can only post one column at a time anyway, so other than the aesthetics of an emulated character sheet, the Display Character button really isn't very useful.

Yes, I understand what you said the first time, I was trying to hint that its just a small thing to have to copy the first few fields and paste it, since the rest does not use fields and can be easily copied. After all the Generator does most of the work for you. This script is written in javascript thus making editing very difficult because of the way it is written - editing one function affects the other, so yes I have looked at it - too much work.

My mistake. I thought I had, but I guess I had not just copied and pasted my character info into the characters thread - I must have looked at the display sheet and typed in or pasted from the boxes, and arranged the data myself for my post, copying the proficiencies, etc. I was misremembering.

Like I said, I've got a 'newbies read this' type faq I'm writing for here and am going to include a quick run through of the character making process but thought there was something wrong with it. I can now make the faq and post it. Thanks Admin.

I think adding the faq to better help the newbies that are interested in playing the game is a good idea. Thanks for you hard work in this area Jpatt.

I have posted the new Newcomer FAQ thread. I wish I was able to be more concise but it's JUST a long read, there's no other way around it. But hopefully any new players WILL read it BEFORE they start, and think it would be a good idea if any other members here that welcome new signups in the main Intro forum, bookmark the FAQ and post the URL to it in your introduction to them so they'll be taken to it as their very first visit to the AD&D section.
