Avan and Bastion ride out together, heading for the encroaching undead as swiftly as is prudent.
Once there they won't engage directly, instead they'll use the speed of their mounts to keep ahead, lobbing oil containers at the hoard to get them well soaked in the flammable liquid. They'll also be assessing the group, seeing if they seem to be directed at all, or just marching to their target.
Aril will ready herself on a rooftop with oil socked ragged wrapped arrows and a small candle nearby. She will keep and eye out for the zombie and what Bastion and Avan are doing and help out in anyway she can to keep them from actually entering the village.
Once the mass of creatures have been fairly well soaked in oil, Bastion will smash open the larger cask he carries, in a spot where it is likely to spread, and is in the path of the undead. He'll stand before it presenting a tempting target, and occasionally firing at the shadowy figures to keep their attention on him.
Retreating past the pool of flammable liquid, he'll seek to ignite it right as the first of the hoard is passing over.
While Avan believes it is still to early to draw attention, he assists Bastions with throwing the pots and casks to soak the undead.
As Bastion prepares the pool of oil, Avan shoots a few arrows at the horde while slowly making his way back to town, up to 70 feet away from the liquid.
"Do you need a light?" Avan asks as the horde passes through the oil pool. He casts Flaming Sphere to ignite it and sends it barrelling into the creatures for extra effect.
For the first 5 rounds, Avan would have tried to control his flaming sphere to collide with a shadowy creature to get a better look, assuming it could get past the swarm of lesser undead.
After the flames die down, he keeps his eyes and ears alert as he whispers to Bastion, "I thought this may be too early and too far away. We should turn back before we are the ones who are ambushed."
Avil keeps an eye out for if any of the horde gets through the fire blaze, she also looks beyond them to see if she might see what the shadowy figures might be. She will also listen for any whispers or statements made by the shadowy figures or her companions.
