Trying to decipher how fresh and to what race the footprints belong Krusten draws her axe. With one hand on the hilt and the other catching the stem before the axe head she goes deeper into the forested area without considering how far it might be. She was determined to find something significant before returning to George's place.
The loss of human prints could also mean that they left on the backs of animals. She checks to see if any heavy prints of load are discovered. She also thinks within herself the possibility that the children wanted to disappear.
