Avan tentatively approaches the hole, sticking to cover where he finds it. He wants to interpose himself between it and Rivoril so the rogue doesn't get hit first. He also wants to get a better look at the creature.
Avan walks right up to the hole and peeks in, letting his spell spill over the entry passage. He stands up straight and announces, "The creature has retreated back and there are no immediate traps of a kind I can detect. I take it we were going to check for other entrances? I'll leave something here."
He searches for a stick or broken wooden beam or other object long enough to cover the hole. He then attaches his Stone of Alarm so that when the blocking object is handled without the command word, a loud alarm will sound.
"Into the ruins, then?" he asks expectantly.
Bastion checks with the young villagers one last time before going over to the others, "Too much to hope for that it was just a dumb and easily goaded brute I suppose."
"And yeah, lets make sure that this is the only entry. We don't want to invade this point only for them to swarm out another and go attack the town, or get in behind us for that matter."
"Lets get up on the walls, should be easier to get the lay of things starting from the top." Bastion switches the Rod to ladder form and sets it against the structure, inviting Rivoril to take point.

Rivoril, having seen the creature move away, and Bastions invitation to climb the ladder, proceeds with the latter.
Keeping a lookout, for any danger or trouble along the way, moving stealthy, and cautiously.
He ties a rope, between himself and Bastion, in case he misses, his footing when climbing.
Bastion nods in satisfaction, "We'll want to watch our backs still, but at least it looks like this is it. We'll make sure the archers know to keep an eye out in all directions."
"If people have long term spells ready to go, now would be a good time. It might take us a few trips down to finish this once and for all, but let us do as much damage as we can before falling back."
Avan drops the spell he'd been concentrating on, and casts Barkskin on himself - it would last an hour. That would be enough time to search the rubble and make an exploration below ground. The jackal tries to sniff out other entrances.
Rivoril, follows Avan in investigating but remaing behind.
Rivoril, follows suit with Avan, activates his mage armor, his armor class gets +4, bringing it to 20.
However, non-corporeal creatures, will bypass it and it would be still 16.
Burns up one, Beguiler 1st level slot.
He moves stealthy, and quietly, his rapier drawn and ready. Actively searching for a way in, moving from cover to cover. On the lookout for danger. Keeping largly hidden, and silent.
