I know there are other classes that have the UMD as a skill. If your class has the UMD skill and not as a cross class skill I will allow the use of wands and staffs. Other wise yes you would need someone who has that skill such as some type of mage.
Did you mean freely, or with the check? Ildrahil does have UMD as a class skill thanks to starting as a rogue, but it will be a long while before he can hit a DC 20 reliably enough for it to be a combat worthy attempt.
If you did mean the latter, if we go asking about for hirelings in town, any chance of any NPCs with the right spell list are remotely willing to consider joining us on a gig like that? If so, what kind of persuasion would they need?
If they have a UMD then they can use a wand or a staff but yes you would have to make a DC check. Granted making a DC of 20 consistently can be tough at lower levels but it is a possibility on good rolls. The attempt to hire a NPC would take something worthwhile for them. Currently there are two mages in the town one is a level 5 and the other a level 4 I believe.
Right then. Presuming someone more charismatic than Bastion is doing the asking, any chance either of them would perk up at the promise of a full share of any loot found? Possibly with a few hundred gold in advance for their trouble?
I am thinking we offer 250 gp to start, haggling up as high as 500 for the L4, and 750 for the L5 thanks to the differences in spellpower. If they claim a need for additional upfront funds for expenses, we'd consider the case they make.
They would make the sixth member of the group, with no intentions of bringing in others at this time, save maybe a few redshirt goons with a fixed payrate rather than a share of overall profit.
On the other hand, it is in our best interest to make it clear how dangerous a prospect the job is from the start. No need to invite last minute cold feet.

We'd mention that if things go as planned, they'd be working from behind several skilled warriors (Maybe have Bastion and Krusten show off a bit). Also mention that druids with the team would be bringing in a large number of animals to help occupy the enemy's attention, and would be prepared to provide medical aid on site.
Beyond that, any particular tricks they have to keep the group alive and going so they can continue to shield the mage would be quite welcome. After all such is why we're hoping to obtain the services of a (Man/woman?) with such impressive talent.
They would mostly be tasked with crowd control, keeping the enemy's numbers advantage from overwhelming those on the front line. Whether they do this with the wand of fireballs, something of their own specialty, or some combination of both.
