I would think that Giuliani would be an excellent choice. Perhaps a lot of people on the far right wouldn't like him for his social points of view, be I think he is almost universally respected for the job he did after 9/11. He is seen as a powerful leader, able to get things done in difficult situations.

But then the people who wouldn't like him don't like GWB either, as they think he is too liberal.

I think Cheney will remain on the ticket. I believe Bush to be a very loyal person. He didn't get rid of Rumsfeld. It is interesting though that Kerry has already attacked Bush over this. On the Imus show this morning he said if Bush did do it, it would make him the biggest flip-flopper of all. laugh.gif

Bush can't win this one. Remember when they were running last time? Everyone made an issue of Cheney's health. Now, if his health is a problem, no one is going to believe it!

BTW - McCain is pretty firm that he won't run for VP for anyone. I can't see him on Bush's ticket. They don't really agree on much. The only thing they have in common really is they are both republicans. Julianni, maybe.

Another BTW - I am one of those who thinks Bush is too liberal, but he certainly isn't as liberal as Kerry!

Here is a good article (opinionated though it may be) on why Bush should not replace Cheney and why the Democrats would want to see that happen. It poses some interesting ideas.

I had a really hard time deciding where to post this. But since there seems to be a link between Sandy Berger (Clinton's former national security advisor) and John Kerry (who is running for U.S. president), I thought this might be the best place.

AP: Clinton Adviser Probed in Terror Memos
by JOHN SOLOMON

WASHINGTON - President Clinton (news - web sites)'s national security adviser, Sandy Berger, is the focus of a Justice Department (news - web sites) investigation after removing highly classified terrorism documents and handwritten notes from a secure reading room during preparations for the Sept. 11 commission hearings, The Associated Press has learned.

Berger and his lawyer said Monday night he knowingly removed handwritten notes he had made while reading classified anti-terror documents at the archives by sticking them in his jacket and pants. He also inadvertently took copies of actual classified documents in a leather portfolio, they said.

Berger served as Clinton's national security adviser for all of the president's second term and most recently has been informally advising Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry (news - web sites). Clinton asked Berger last year to review and select the administration documents that would be turned over to the commission.

"I deeply regret the sloppiness involved, but I had no intention of withholding documents from the commission, and to the contrary, to my knowledge, every document requested by the commission from the Clinton administration was produced," Berger said in a statement to the AP. [emphasis mine]

"In the course of reviewing over several days thousands of pages of documents on behalf of the Clinton administration in connection with requests by the Sept. 11 commission, I inadvertently took a few documents from the Archives," Berger said.

"When I was informed by the Archives that there were documents missing, I immediately returned everything I had except for a few documents that I apparently had accidentally discarded," he said.

Maybe this should be a topic of its own?

Anyway, the real problem isn't just what did he plan to do with the documents. Was he planning to conceal them. The real problem is you can't just take classified documents home with you. When you are carrying them on your person, they are at great risk. What if he had been in an accident on the way home? Injured or killed, those documents would have then been in the hands of people without security clearances. Those documents require a security clearance for a reason. This is a very serious crime. One that carries very serious penalties. Since he is a politician, should we just forgive him because he meant well? A military member wouldn't get such forgiveness.

I hate to say this, but this story just highlights the whole attitude that the Clinton administration, and by extension, the Democrat leadership, has/had towards security. So far, I haven't seen where Mr. Kerry shows any change in attitude towards national security, including dealing with classified materials.

Today, Mr. Berger resigned as formal advisor to John Kerry, citing that he did not want his investigation in the 9-11 commission to affect the Senator's presidential campaign. Unfortunately, like Nighthawk pointed out, the damage has been done, and this lapse in judgement shows that the current Democrats are not the ones we want this country to rely on for national security matters. How could Mr. Berger claimed he 'inadvertently' took classified documents to his home, and then misplaced them? These documents are now being described as blueprints for thwarting Al-Qaeda activity against the US; blueprints that were subsequently not passed along to the Bush administration when he assumed office.

This campaign has already gotten extremely vicious. There have been several people, including lots of "protestors" who have been trying to liken GW Bush to Adolph Hitler. Some of it has gotten into the news, but a lot hasn't.

Such characterizations are obviously extreme exagerations, but they are having an effect, increasing the abject hatred so many have towards President Bush.

Here is an excellent analysis of the two men, and their administrations.
