Obama: The Cold War in the Americas is over

Obama nominates first U.S. Ambassador to Cuba in more than 50 years
The president nominated Jeffrey DeLaurentis, a career diplomat who has served as the chief of mission for the U.S. In Havana since 2014. The move must be approved by the Republican-controlled Senate, where it will face stiff opposition. Ref. USAToday.
President Barack Obama is ending the longstanding "Wet foot, dry foot" policy that allows Cubans who arrive in the United States without a visa to become permanent residents, two senior US officials told CNN Thursday.
The policy has applied solely to Cubans. Other immigrants who attempt to enter the United States without a visa face arrest and deportation. Havana has long argued the policy encourages Cubans to make the dangerous crossing from Cuba to Florida.
The decision was likely Obama's last move in his historic dealings with Cuba. In 2014, he reopened US relations with the island nation after a half-century of frozen diplomatic ties. Ref. CNN.
This should have happened long ago. Florida is saturated with so many Cubans that you can't tell if you are in Cuba or America.

President Donald Trump charted his own course for more confrontational relations with the Castro-led government in Cuba with a speech in Miami on Friday.
The speech, which came as the President signed a directive outlining his posture toward Cuba, is the latest attempt by the Trump administration to weaken former President Barack Obama's legacy. Obama spent the last two years of his presidency looking to warm relations with Cuba, visiting the island in 2016.
Trump's change in posture, however, is only a partial shift from Obama's policy. Ref. CNN.
