The S. Koreans are upset because they have poor and starving in their country, but definitely not to the degree that is present in the north. However, each year, S. Korea sends grain and meat to N. Korea in hopes for good will and to help feed the north's poor. The only problem is that each grain of rice or hoof of a cow passes through the governments hands before it would even have a chance to reach the poor. Those that have seen how Kim Jong Il lives can tell you he is not anywhere near starving (look at he gut in those fatigues). Here are a few memories from his personal chef:

It is certainly good to be the king or Dear Leader for that matter! Think a few of those cows that S. Korea sent this year to the north made it to Kim's dinner table?
I would like to hope that he can be overthrown, but Juche (Government Ideology) and this new found power (the nuke) will make it dificult. He is very similar to Stalin in his treatment of perceived adversaries with the work camps spread throughout the country. Russian Communism wasn't so much overthrown as it was more like capitalism infected it and killed off the host. The only good thing I hear from N. Korea is that Kim Jong Il is experimenting with limited capitalism (allowed in certain designated areas of the country). IMO, there is NO such thing as limited capitalism. It might start that way, but it is a illness for communism and a vitamin for democracy. Hopefully, Kim Jong Il's communism suffers the same fate as Russia's "limited capitalism" or that his heir is not nearly as strong a leader.

His named successor already has as healthy of a taste for western things as Kim Jong Il himself. Perhaps he might not be as strong as his father when he takeas charge. Unfortunately, that is what the world thought when they were waiting 3 years for Kim Jong Il to make a appearance after his fathers death.

A N. KOREA WAR: WINNABLE BUT MESSY, GENERAL SAYS
The U.S. military would prevail in a war against North Korea but at a greater cost in lives than if the United States were not already fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff said Tuesday.

Let me first say that , No, I do not believe the US is at all frightened by the North Koreans, their military capacity is medieval compared to ours. Second, these "nukes"
they claim to have are small and rather weak, not to say that they couldn't do some damage, but it wouldn't be on an catastrophic scale to be sure.
I think that the worlds attitude to the US right now is not because the US is so evil, and we try to exploit everyone (rolls eyes) , but because we represent power, and the only major world power at that, so is like a game of king of the hill, knock off the biggest.
Europe's opinion of us is also based off of political differences, we are more conservative, they are more socialist, so they see us as a threat. The North Korean economy is almost nonexistent, I don't think they could survive on their limited resources against the largest , most resilient economy in the world.
In short , I think it would be absurd to think the US is afraid of N.Korea.
Patriot Defense
The U.S. is considering deploying its advanced Patriot missile defense system near Tokyo after North Korea's recent missile and nuclear tests, a newspaper reported Sunday.

U.S. TAKES GADGETS AWAY FROM KIM The Bush administration wants North Korea's attention, so like a scolding parent, it's trying to make it tougher for that country's eccentric leader to buy iPods, plasma televisions and Segway electric scooters. https://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/asiapcf/11/2...s.ap/index.html |

The N. Korean leader have a "expensive" taste while his people are literally starving. The US proposal of items that can't be shipped to North Korea is naive somehow because the guy can get those things from any country, or get them illegally, so what is the purpose of it? *shrugs*

Kim is reportedly under his physician's orders to avoid hard liquor and prefers French wines. He also is said to own an extensive movie library of more than 10,000 titles and likes films about James Bond and Godzilla, along with Clint Eastwood's 1993 drama, "In the Line of Fire," and Whitney Houston's 1992 love story, "The Bodyguard." |

Is this some sort of sick joke? The idiot at the White House who came up with this plan should be sacked immediately. How on earth is stopping a few luxury items from the US going to affect a ruthless dictator? Do they honestly believe Kim hasn't got mot of what they are trying to ban? Do they think he will care if he can't drink US shipped Congac? I think US foreign policy has lost the plot a long time ago and this is the latest in a long show-reel of America's funniest home-made foreign policy gaffes.
LDS I agree with you, what about the starving people? A lot of America's policy is punishing one evil man while ignoring millions of starving people who have been neglected by Kim already.
