This editorial makes great points, but completely ignores that with Iraq the whole world has NOT cooperated. China and Russia were both egging on (and supporting) Iraq. And now they are doing the same with Iran.

QUOTE (Tortdog)
China continues to stand with the West against N. Korea.

Since when did China ever 'stand with the West' over North Korea?

USA vs North Korea History & Civil Business Politics

China has been standing up to North Korea and joining in the multi-party talks for quite some time. It was this strategy that was criticized by President Bush's opponents (arguing we should meet with North Korea 1 on 1). Bush has refused, insisting on multi-party talks.

I'm quite sure that had China resisted American desires for multi-party talks that North Korea would have held fast. But being isolated by even its closest ally (China), North Korea FINALLY gave in.

QUOTE
Media reports indicated that in February 2003 two separate high-level DPRK delegations visiting Beijing were treated coldly by their hosts, and that "the Chinese told the visitors bluntly to stop provoking the Americans, hinting that if Pyongyang ignored the advice, China would not be able to maintain its long-standing opposition to sanctions."

Sure, China was there in the talks, but that does not mean she 'stood with the West'. China was merely acting in her benefit as she has enough nuclear countries surrounding her, there is no need for more, especially from a radical.

Sure. I'm certain that's the reason for China's position. But that doesn't change the fact that she "stood with the West." In fact, the very point that introducing nuclear weapons to the Korean peninsula was the very sale that America made to China.

Just because China stood with the West against North Korea this time, does not mean that I expect China to stand with the West against Iran or other Western causes. It's all about self-interest. This whole war of terror comes down to America and its allies convincing fellow nations that terrorism is wrong per se, and not just because the terrorists don't like YOU (as opposed to your enemies).

I don't think China and Russia really believe that, yet.

China was merely using the 'Art of War' principle in regards to the US and North Korea, it is as simple as that.

Which principle of Sun Tzu are you referring to?

And how does that principle nullify my view that China stood with the West in opposing North Korea's nuclear ambitions?

Keep your friends close and your enemies closer for starts. If you interpret that using the words 'stand with' in regards to the North Korean situation and US involvement then I guess that is just your opinion.
