The U.S. Navy is moving a sea-based radar platform closer to the North Korean coast to monitor that country's military moves, including possible new missile launches, a Defense Department official said Monday.
The decision to dispatch the oil rig-like SBX-1 is the first of what may be other Navy deployments, CNN has learned. It follows weeks of belligerent rhetoric from North Korea since a February nuclear bomb test, including the renunciation of the 60-year-old armistice that ended the Korean War and threats to use nuclear weapons. U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon says North Korea's nuclear threats are not a game and that the current crisis has gone too far.
"I am deeply troubled," Moon said in a statement. "As Secretary-General, it is my duty to prevent war and to pursue peace. It is also my responsibility to state that the current crisis has already gone too far."
Moon said aggressive rhetoric and military posturing only result in counteractions, and fuel fear and instability. "Things must begin to calm down," he said.
After weeks of hurling threats at the United States and its allies, North Korea announced plans today to restart a reactor at its main nuclear complex that it had agreed to shut down more than five years ago. US Navy shifts destroyer in wake of North Korea missile threats:
The USS McCain is capable of intercepting and destroying a missile, should North Korea decide to fire one off, the officials said. Still, U.S. Defense officials insist that there is nothing to indicate that North Korea is on the verge of another launch. Ref. Source 2
The U.S. Military is sending a land-based missile defense system to Guam to defend against possible North Korean ballistic missile launches, according to a news release from the Department of Defense.
The statement said the missiles, a truck-mounted launcher, and radar and target acquisition systems will be deployed in the "Coming weeks."
The move follows weeks of bombastic threats against the United States and South Korea from the North's young leader, Kim Jong Un, and his government. Ref. CNN
