China 'has prepared for a preemptive strike against US military bases:
China's missile testing grounds and US military bases shows a pattern - all of the missile tests have been aimed at destroying US carriers, destroyers and airfields in East Asia, the report said. Ref. Source 5v.
So this is a quandary for our new president, as it was for our old president. China is an emerging economic and military superpower. They are breaking international norms. So, do we stop them? Is it even our job to stop them? If we don't will they be satisfied or like Hitler will it make them think us weak and embolden them to go for more? If we do try and stop them how far do we go?
As an aside, China has been artificially weak militarily and economically because of what European powers did to her for centuries. They caught her at a particularly vulnerable time when they had a weak government that had become corrupt and insular. Had Europeans tried partitioning China at virtually any other time in her history they would have stopped. For most of history China was economically, militarily, and scientifically one of the most powerful and advanced country. She is taking her normal place back and her leaders are pretty upset at the was she was treated for the last three centuries. That is some background of how we got here.
I think we should treat China with respect and try to find common ground. . We should set boundaries around Taiwan, Japan etc. They should continue to know that attacking those countries is the same as attacking us. I assume the US has plans already if war with China occurs. Thats all we can really do.
Kyrroeth,
Yeah, we have plans and it would be ugly. The thing is, what they are doing in the South China Sea is against international law. Now, do we try to stop them? Sure, we treat them with respect but that's kind of like treating someone who lives a few houses down your street with respect after they build a fence around their property that crosses the street and cuts off your access unless you pay a fee. Also, that fence takes up part of all of their neighbors' properties as well. It really doesn't affect you, but if you placate him now will he one day make his fence bigger to the point where it does? Oh, and some of his neighbors have been your friend for decades. You have already helped your friends by taking the aggressor to court and he was found guilty of breaking international law, but he still doesn't budge. What do you do?
Personally, I don't think China will push this. I think they consider this portion of the South China Sea their historical territory and they won't grab for any more. But one day will they consider Vietnam as their sphere and try to grab it? Or maybe they'll try and take Nepal, or parts of India. These are the kinds of things placating an aggressor may lead to. History shows that this is a possibility and something we have to consider when we react to this.
