U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel announced today that the United States has evidence chemical weapons have been used in Syria.
Hagel's remarks come a couple of days after an Israeli intelligence official said Damascus was using weapons banned under international law against its own people in the country's civil war. Syria has said rebels have used chemical weapons.
President Barack Obama has said the Syrian government's use of chemical weapons against its own people would be a "Game changer." Ref. CNN

Richards's caution reflects apprehension among American military chiefs. General Martin Dempsey, chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, has warned Congress that any use of force in Syria would be "Unlikely to produce predictable outcomes". Ref. Source 3
"I have to make sure I have the facts," President Barack Obama said today at a media briefing, regarding evidence Syria used chemical weapons.
We don't yet know "how they were used, when they were used, who used them ... And when I am making decisions about American national security and the potential for taking additional action in response to chemical weapons use, I have to make sure I have the facts," Obama said.
Obama also took questions about the Boston bombing. He said the Russians "have been very cooperative with us" and that he has spoken to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Putin is "Committed to working with me ... (to ensure) that those who report to us are cooperating fully, not only in this investigation ... But (on) counterterrorism issues directly," he said. Ref. CNN
US says Syria has beefed up air defenses:
With technical support from Russia, Syria has bolstered its air defenses, posing a threat to US aircraft if America decides to intervene in the war, a US official said Ref. Source 9
Sectarian shadow hangs over latest reported mass killing in Syria's civil war;
The bodies of the Syrian boys and young men in jeans and casual shirts were strewn along a blood-stained pavement, dying apparently where they fell. Weeping women moved among the dead, and one of them screamed, "Where are you, people of the village?" Ref. Source 9
Syria: massacres of Sunni families reported in Assad's heartland:
The pictures appear to tell a familiar story. In one a pile of bodies lies on a street corner, shot down, apparently where they were gathered. Among them is a girl in a red blouse, perhaps five years old, spreadeagled among a dozen other family members, some covered in sheets. A baby's legs are visible and a crumpled man has apparently been shot through the spine. Ref. Source 1

Syrian troops have taken control of a town near the main road linking the capital, Damascus, with Jordan, an advance in the regime's campaign to drive rebels from the south, an activist group has said. Ref. Source 5
Germany Fears US Intervention in Syria:
The German government is starting to worry about parallels between the Iraq war 10 years ago and the Syrian conflict. The Foreign Ministry believes that mounting concern over the possible use of chemical weapons by the Assad regime could prompt the US government to launch a military intervention. Ref. Source 7
