The loyalty of our pets are usually beyond the loyalty of people. Once we commit to a pet, we commit for it's entire existence, not just the times we need them. Far too often people get tired of their pets for their inconvenience and needs, and abandon them. Unlike children, pets never 'grow up' or become independent, thus needing commitment that seems to be beyond a lot of people. It's even worse for animals with longer life spans like parrots. Animals that can live 50 or more years have to be put into wills and handled from generation to generation, which is very difficult to arrange when the next 'owner' may not even want such a pet.
This is a very sad case. I know all my pets that I have are in their furrever home and I will never abandon them. They are very happy pets and I take great care to see that my pets are well taken care of. I do know that I may not be getting any more pets due to the fact I am not sure I will be there to care for them for their life span.
