I was so happy when we passed this bill. They tried hard to make up facts that make it look as though this is a torturous procedure that kills and hurts women. The facts are much different and people saw right through the facade. They criticized Michael J. Fox for not taking his medicine before his commercial, yet no one said anything when Kurt Warner comes on TV and acts like waiting just 15 years for a possible cure for cancer is a bad thing! We have lived with many of these diseases for thousands of years, and fifteen years to get a cure is some how a strike against the research? If you don't do the research, then a cure never comes, but no one said anything about that. The commercials against it were disgraceful, unethical, and just plain false. I am glad Missouri saw through the nonsense and passed the bill.
Further, they said it allows cloning via constitutional amendment. Again, false statements from ignorant celebrities. Human reproductive cloning is banned in the bill. Therapeutic cloning is allowed. In other words, you can't clone a person, but you can clone organs and such. In Missouri, there will never be a human cloned for replacement parts or walking and talking, only test tube cloning of specific organs. So all the ethical concerns they tried to start, were also false. Can't they at least come up with a real argument against it? No, they can't because the real problem they have is the process. Taking an egg, fertilizing it in a test tube, then three days later, harvesting the "embryo", actually, not even that, its only 120 cells, less than in a baby flies new wing, and use the stem cells for research.
This comes down to religion verses science once again. They won't admit it, but its about the idea of life beginning of conception and the idea that every person has a soul at conception. Its religious superstition that needs to be left at home. Religion is once again holding back science, just like the dark ages. But Missouri saw through it, finally, and good for us!
STEM CELL RESEARCHERS HOPEFUL, CAUTIOUS OVER 'GIANT STEP FOWARD'
Stem cell researchers reacted with enthusiasm and reservations to a report that scientists have found stem cells in amniotic fluid, a discovery that would allow them to sidestep the controversy over destroying embryos for research.

Researchers Able to Turn Adult Stem Cells of Mice Into Embryonic Stem Cells
Tokyo, Japan (LifeNews.com) -- Japanese scientists have made progress in the field of stem cell research with a new process that is able to turn adult stem cells in mice back into their embryonic state. If the process can be duplicated in humans it could go a long way to helping resolve some of the ethical issues that surround stem cell research. Pro-life groups support stem cell research but oppose the embryonic kind because it involves the destruction of days-old unborn children. According to the London Times newspaper, Professor Shinya Yamanaka talked about the progress the scientists made and said he thinks he can replicate the study in humans. "It is hard to predict how the science will develop," he said, "but I think we could produce a basic prototype-induced stem cell made from a human adult cell within six months to a year." It also said he thinks it's possible to create a stem cell that is "indistinguishable from one taken from an embryo" in the next two to three years. Reacting to the report, Dawn Vargo of Focus on the Family told CitizenLink that Yamanaka's research shows stem cell research can move forward without sacrificing morals. "This new 'holy grail' of stem-cell research - embryonic-like stem cells - is further evidence that pro-life voices are being heard and have changed the course of the stem-cell debate," Vargo said. "While embryonic stem cells were once the gold standard of research, we now have research being conducted that does not require the destruction of embryonic life."
Britain is taking a giant step here and I am sure the US is going to be looking on in anticipation of the results.

British Government Gives Initial Approval to Human-Animal Cloning London, England (LifeNews.com) -- The British government has opened a Pandora's box that worries pro-life advocates because scientists will be allowed to create clones consisting of human and animal parts. The decision is the first step in the approval process and now a licensing committee will review two applications to engage in the research. The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority considered the proposals from scientists at King's College London and Newcastle University. It said there was "no fundamental reason" to prevent the research. "However, public opinion is very finely divided, with people generally opposed to this research unless it is tightly regulated and it is likely to lead to scientific or medical advancements," it added. "This is not a total green light for cytoplasmic hybrid research, but recognition that this area of research can, with caution and careful scrutiny, be permitted." A new poll the HFEA conducted of 2,000 British residents finding that only 35 percent agreed with making human-animal hybrids while 48 percent disagreed. Anthony Ozimic, a spokesman for the Society for the Protection of Unborn Children, said his group is upset by the decision. "This is not just a case of the 'yuck factor,'" he told the newspaper. "There are grave ethical and moral objections to this research and the way it is being promoted. Ref. https://www.lifenews.com/nat3310.html |

President Bush Touts Ethical Stem Cell Research, Calls for Human Cloning Ban
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- President Bush used his State of the Union address to laud ethical forms of stem cell research that don't involve the destruction of human life and he urged scientists to continue pursuing moral forms of the science. The president also renewed his call for a ban on human cloning in all its forms and rejecting the commodification of human life. "On matters of life and science, we must trust in the innovative spirit of medical researchers and empower them to discover new treatments while respecting moral boundaries," President Bush said. Bush touched on the discovery two teams of scientists made in November about the derivation of a new process that allows for the creation of embryonic-like stem cells without the destruction of human life. "This breakthrough has the potential to move us beyond the divisive debates of the past by extending the frontiers of medicine without the destruction of human life," the president said. "So we're expanding funding for this type of ethical medical research." As he has in a previous State of the Union, Bush called on Congress to pass a ban on all forms of human cloning. "And, as we explore promising avenues of research, we must also ensure that all life treated with the dignity it deserves," he said. "And so I call on Congress to pass legislation that bans unethical practices such as the buying, selling, patenting or cloning of human life."

Hybrid Human Cloning is Scientific Manipulation of the Dignity of Man
by Ken Conner
Popular culture is blindly embracing science and ignoring legitimate moral concerns. Human dignity is steadily being eroded in the pursuit of the "advancement of science" and the quest for "cures." Increasingly, we are losing our common understanding of what it means to be a human being, and the idea that human beings are something "special" is rapidly becoming an antiquated notion. Science is unquestionably a worthwhile pursuit, but many have come to view science as an end unto itself. The unbridled pursuit of science and technology is glorified, and any who suggest constraining science within limits of morality or propriety are condemned. Raising the simple question of whether something should be done is considered taboo. Radical science advocates are only interested in whether something can be done. Central to the "science without limits" view is the notion that man is merely an animal, the product of random chance. God is removed from the creation equation and the notion of moral truth is abandoned. Notions of right and wrong are relegated to the spheres of theology and philosophy and do not constrain the consciences or actions of radical scientists. The latest example of the results of radical science is the blending of human DNA and animal cells in Britain. There scientists extracted the DNA from a human embryonic cell and injected it into a "emptied" cow egg. This process, it is argued, produces a 99.9% human embryo from which scientists can harvest stem cells for further research and analysis

I think that human cloning should be banned. However at the same time I agree with research in growing T cells for replacement parts in a human. I beleive that this can help people live a fuller and more meaningful life. If we can find a way to assist people live longer and healthier then we should do it.
