Flight from San Diego overshoots destination

MINNEAPOLIS - Two Northwest Airlines pilots flying from San Diego to Minneapolis on Wednesday failed to make radio contact with ground controllers for more than an hour and overflew their destination by 150 miles before discovering the mistake and turning around. Ref. Source 5

I think they fell asleep why wouldn't they make radio contact for so long but the it puzzles me why didnt the controllers check them about why they were going passed their destination?

I like how they said they were in a heated debate over airline policy and failed to properly listen to ground radio. I guess we will see when they play the cockpit recorder and hear snoring.

Two Northwest Airlines pilots have told federal investigators that they were going over schedules using their personal laptops in the cockpit ? a violation of airline policy ? while their plane overflew their Minneapolis destination by more than 100 miles, the National Transportation Safety Board said yesterday. Failed Radio Contact With Ground Controllers

Flight schedules were enough distraction on their personal computers to have them over fly their intended airport by over a hour. I believe there is a good reason why the parent company says no personal laptops in the cockpit. This is a good example why.

I think that revoking their license was the way to go as it will send a clear message to all pilots that this type of behavior will not be tolerated.
