Three Strikes Law

Do you think if an offender has a pattern then he/she should be sentenced to jail time automatically?

EDITORIAL: END MANDATORY SENTENCES
As a Supreme Court justice, Anthony Kennedy voted with the majority in a recent
decision to uphold California's "three strikes" law, which automatically
sentences people to at least 25 years in prison for their third felony offense.
But as a private citizen, he spoke out this week against such laws.

Law Strikes Three

Absolutely, positively No, No, No.

Jail time appropriate for the crime, yes.  But three strikes laws can end up giving someone a life sentence for writing a bad check while child molesters are free to go after seven.   ???

I am sorry, I tend to rant on this topic.  The whole idea came up because some politicians wanted to look tough on crime.  People like programs that sound good and they really don't want to have to think too hard before they vote.  So we get all these get tough laws that do nothing to prevent crime but create inequities in the justice system. >:(

Okay, I'll stop now but the US could use some serious overhaul of its criminal justice system.   :-[

I think it would be ok for the 'three strikes law', but only for convicted felons committing felonies.  There should be some kind of middle ground on the 'three strikes law'.  It's too bad that law makers don't stop and think about some of these laws before they vote on them.  Some of them just don't make any kind of sense.  Mississippi actually has some really stupid laws, almost to the point that you could laugh at them.

Law Strikes Three

Execution. I think most, if not all crimes that rate 'moderate' and above in the current legal system should be punishable by death on the third strike.

Three Strikes Law

I think the Three Strikes Law applies on to serious crime not writing of bad checks. Even if it is so, jailtime should be commensurate with the severity of the crime. I do think it is a good idea to have the Three Strikes Law if the 3 strikes are for the same category (in terms of severity) of crime.

But if it is rape and murder, one strike and you're are out! In my book, anyway.

I would agree with it ONLY if the crimes are really serious! (not for writing a bad check or not paying your speed ticket) :smile.gif Death penalty should apply to any crime that deserves such a punishment.

I agree with you on this.  The three strikes law should not apply to this.  I definitely should be one strike and you are out on those.

I also agree with you, LDS.  The punishment should fit the crime.  It a person commits a violent crime, they should be punished to the highest extent of the law, including the death penalty.  There should be some sort of middle ground in regards to the three strikes law and it should fit the crime.
