Good news and bad news.

First, the good news. Hopefully this will lead to some cure fast.

"Two nearly identical sequences of the SARS (news - web sites) virus genetic structure have been reviewed and authenticated by experts."

Now, the bad news:

HONG KONG (Reuters) - Hong Kong doctors have discovered for the first time traces of the deadly SARS (news - web sites) virus in the stool and urine of patients thought to be free of the virus and discharged from hospital, officials said on Thursday.

SARS - Do you have it? History & Civil Business Politics

We really need to wonder if this SARS virus was not started as part of a bio attack gone sour. Or maybe the target was a success? If so what would be the reason for starting it in China?

WASHINGTON/BEIJING (Reuters) - The SARS (news - web sites) virus can live for days in the stool and urine of patients, the World Health Organization (news - web sites) said on Sunday in a new report that could shed light on the frightening spread of the disease.

Scary thought of using public toilets .....

Also, explained to a certain degree why children are less affected:
"Acidity seems to be important -- stool in diarrhea is more alkaline and thus seems to be more hospitable for the virus. The stool of newborns, which is more acidic, kills the virus after three hours. "

Just the thought of that makes me sick! Not that I use public toilets, but that some got it that way.

biggrin.gif  JB, I won't be surprised that some 'got it that way' in China. I was told public hygiene there is not at all great.

I was in our city center today. Our so-called Golden Mile stretch of roads were practically jam free. What a surprise! Not sure if it is SARS related but for sure there are visibly fewer tourists. A lot of the restaurants and shops are closed too. This is in Kuala Lumpur (fondly referred to as KL by the locals), Malaysia where we are supposed to be pretty much SARS free. I hate to think of what is happening to our neighbor, Singapore.

Are people there wearing masks? You know I often wonder how a government ould declare a place to be 'SARS free' since people enter a country everyday undetected. A big way people enter a country is by boat and they do not get all the screening done at an airport.

Well, so far only people in certain places are wearing masks, eg. hospitals. The public in general are not wearing, although you would see some wearing them as a matter of precaution, but not like in Hong Kong or China. Malaysia is classified as SARS free because all the suspected and probable cases as well as the 3 that died, were all recent visitors to either China or Singapore. There has been no local contagion so far. But no many people are buying that classification. How do you know an 'imported' virus won't run wild here too? :smile.gif  Anyway, we are very wary of the situation.

On another note, I think the next big seller will be rubber gloves. Go invest in those companies .... wink.gif

Sars 'can be spread by touch'

New research into the deadly Sars virus suggests it might be able to be spread through contact with contaminated objects.
