THREATS WON'T STOP NUCLEAR PROGRAM, VOWS IRAN PRESIDENT

Iran's president on Friday said he doesn't "give a darn" about calls to end his country's nuclear program, hours before the world's nuclear watchdog is to deliver a key report to the United Nations.

I was reading through this discussion again, and realized there were some comments made earlier, to which I did not respond right away. One of them suggested that the US is only being backed by Britain in some form of response to Iran. Let it be known that France has also openly backed the US and Britain on this, and even Russia and China are considering action as well. This is not necessarily military action, but economic sanctions. In fact, May 3, these 5 countries and Germany will discuss this issue at the United Nations. I guess what I am trying to say is that the US is not the only country that realizes Iran is not only ignoring the IAEA and UN, but also that they are a threat because of their defiance. The Iran situation is very different than Iraq, in my opinion.

Actually China and Russia are both opposed to economic sanctions largely because both countries have significant economic interests in Iran. Russia is building nuclear facilities for Iran and China relies upon their oil.

There is no doubt that the Iran situation is different in some respects. The EU and UN appear more concerned over Iran than Iraq. The similarities I would draw are this whole notion about WMDs without proof. Iran have said all along they aren't pursuing nuclear weapons. I just don't want the same mistake made with Iran that happened with Iraq.

It looks like, depending on whose news you read, that Iran may be beginning to soften to sanctions. I don't know whether the really have the capabilities for nukes, or will have that soon or not. But I do know that fighting wars on three fronts at once is silly and dangerous. It would no be beneficial to us, and war overall rarely has a winner. I really hope that this can get resolved with out violence and war, especially without nukes.

To be honest, can Iran handle or compete with Israel's military? If they ever retaliated against Israel, for whatever reason, I believe Israel would be able to handle them, and rather easily. Once again I just believe this is a lot of posturing on Iran's part. Did you also hear that Iranian workers are currently on labor strikes and looking for the Labor Minister to step down? I don't know how much this is affecting their nuclear program, but all is not peaceful within the Iranian borders.

I agree with you Malexander. I believe it is all posturing because Iran is starting to believe the US wants regime change and we all know what happens when this is the case.

Israel would defeat Iran, but there would be a lot of bloodshed if these two countries went to war. Don't underestimate Iran, they may be an unstable country, but they held of a US-backed Iraq for many years.

I really feel sorry for the Iranian people. The only time they had a democratic government in the past 50 years the UK and US intelligence agencies helped engineer a coup to remove it and replace it with a monarchy that oppressed the Iranian people. Of course it was all over oil, they didn't want the Iranians to nationalise their oil so that popularly elected regime had to go.

Now the Iranians have been riddled with terrible leaders ever since, their history is quite tragic. Hopefully this current lunatic is forced out of office, but only through the wish of the Iranians, NOBODY else.

I think Iran is full of hot air at the moment, trying to give one last push before backing down. Iran knows it cannot win a war against the US, Britain, and Israel. Thats a silly threat to make and they know it. To me, it shows me a real possibility of getting out of this without violence, which is what I have wanted all along. This recent threat with the inner turmoil is just a last ditch effort to get out of this without looking like they backed down from the US.
