JB:

The new sanctions are just a polishing up of the old. This is nothing more than what the UN says is a message to Iran that there is a unified objection to their nuclear program:

QUOTE
The six world powers that drafted the new resolution spent Friday trying to overcome objections from several council members, reflecting concerns that anything short of consensus would weaken efforts to rein in Iran's nuclear defiance.

There were several minor concessions but no changes to the key sanctions agreed upon last week by the United States, China, Russia, Britain, France and Germany.

The new sanctions - already a compromise between the stronger measures favored by the United States and the Europeans and the softer approach advocated by Russian and China - are considered modest. The ban on exports is among the harshest measures, but many of Iran's arms sales may not be affected because they are illicitly sent to militant groups like Lebanon's Hezbollah and Shiite militias in Iraq.

Still, world powers hoped that approving the resolution quickly and unanimously would signal that Iran will face stricter sanctions each time it ignores a Security Council deadline to suspend uranium enrichment, a process that can be used to produce nuclear energy or nuclear weapons.

"This resolution sends an unambiguous signal to the government and people of Iran ... that the path of nuclear proliferation by Iran is not one that the international community can accept," said British Ambassador Emyr Jones Parry.

Unambiguous? I think this clearly sends a signal to Iran saying that this is as unified as we can get. From here on out, this is about as much opposition as you can expect. Your biggest battle now is to pay Russia for the fuel and be on your way.

Israel knows with the spotlight on the middle east that it wont be as easy to get foregiveness this time around. They are also aware that it wont be as easy as it was last time as Iran is more prepared for their assult. Israel also knows that the fuel has not been sent to Iran. Just before the fuel arrives or shortly after it is delivered onsight, I would not be surprised to see Israel attack if the UN is unsuccessful at resolving the issue and by the looks of what they have created to do it, success doesn't seem too close at hand.

IRAN SAYS BRITISH SAILORS 'CONFESS' TO ILLEGAL ENTRY

Iran says the 15 British sailors and marines seized by Iran in the Persian Gulf have confessed to trespassing into Iranian territory, the semi-official FARS News Agency reported Saturday.

From the same CNN article:

QUOTE
There have been similar incidents in the past. In 2004, Iran stopped three British boats and seized eight sailors and six marines. The Iranian Foreign Ministry said at the time the three boats had crossed into Iran's territorial waters.

The detained service members appeared on Iranian television blindfolded.

They were released after Iran said it determined they had mistakenly crossed into Iran's waters.

I don't see how this will be resolved easily or quickly, with Iran claiming these sailors have "confessed" to wrongdoing.

Also, I don't believe that "sanctions" work. It only serves to inflame the situation.

While for obvious reasons I don't want Iran to have nuclear weapons, President Ahmadinejad has correctly stated that Iran is a sovereign nation with the full rights to explore their military options. How in the world can the G-6 UN council make them stop with a few sanctions?

Vincenzo, I agree that the "quiet" ones are the ones to watch, and Israel does have a history of pre-emptive strikes. As with Iran, I think Israel has full rights to explore their military options, and to protect themselves against obvious threats - and Iran is.

The bad news is, I expect we'll be seeing all out war before the end of the year, with harsh consequences for all involved.

Rather off topic, but...
If the only export from the Middle East was bananas, would we be there? This is all about resources.

They are not going to stop them, they are just going to make life difficult, however the funny thing about the UN is on one side you have countries saying "Yes let us impose sanctions" while on the other hand you have Russia saying "Yes, we will help you build a nuclear facility".

I wonder, do the British really track every position of their sailors on the open sea? If so, why did not anyone detect the Iranian presence 1.7 miles into Iraqi seas?

however the funny thing about the UN

Definitely an issue, with one hand dealing out and one hand reeling in. This is going to boil over at some point, and I hope it's not over the deaths of these 15 sailors and marines. A flashpoint is coming soon, I fear.
