USA vs Iran - Page 31

I share the iranian peoples desperation at the attitude of Western and even other non-Persian nations when it comes to analysing politics in Iran. I have travelled there myself and my Father migrated and lived there in the early days of the Revolution I even speak a bit of Farsi. Even though I myself am not Persian I have huge respect for them and their leadership.

Here are a few point I have issues with?

1. Iran is hell bent on acquiring nuclear weapons.

This claim I believe is baseless. There is very little evidence to back it up. On the other hand there are fatwas or religious edicts from the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei declaring Nuclear weapons to be forbidden (haram). Numerous statements from Irans President clearly stating Irans disapproval with the whole concept of Nuclear weapons. Rather why is it so hard to believe they genuinely want nuclear energy?

2. People in Iran are unhappy with the Islamic Government.

This is a popular picture presented to the western mass audiences. From my travels to the region people in Iran are no less happy with their leaders than Britain or America. Rather there is a mass support for the continuing Islamic revolution not to forget that Ahmadinejad was actually elected with a large electoral turnout.

3. Ahmadinejad is antisemitic.

The number of times media outlets quote "wipe israel off the map" is annoying. Ahmadinejad has repeatedly since explained what he meant by that term and it definitely isn't genocide. Rather he was advocating the abolishment of the zionist entity which is institutionally racist and fresh referendum elections with a new administration representative of all groups within the region.

4. Everything the Iranian administration does is sinister.

This is a very cynical way to approach matters. Eg if Iran releases soldiers on Easter/ Pesach (incidentally it was also the birthday of Prophet Mohammed) why be cynical about it?

I could rant on and on but I would like to hear some enlightened views on the matter.

What do you think about the statements by the President of Iran concerning Vice-President Dick Cheney that Washington would prevent the Islamic republic from dominating the Middle East?

QUOTE
ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates (AP) -- The Iranian president said Monday Iran will retaliate if the U.S. strikes the country militarily.

The Iranian president made a tough response to recent comments by the Vice President Dick Cheney that Washington would prevent the Islamic republic from dominating the Middle East.

Iranian leader Mahmoud Ahmadinejad also said Iran had agreed for the benefit of the Iraqi people to meet with the U.S. in Baghdad to discuss security in Iraq.

"They (the U.S.) cannot strike Iran," he said at a press conference during a two-day visit to the United Arab Emirates. "The Iranian people can protect themselves and retaliate."

The Iranian president's comments followed those on Friday by Cheney, who said from the deck of an aircraft carrier in the Persian Gulf that the U.S. and its allies would prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons and dominating the region.

Despite the tense words, the U.S. and Iran announced Sunday that they have agreed to meet in Baghdad to discuss security and stability in Iraq.

"Both parties have confirmed the talks will take place in Baghdad in the presence of the Iraqi government," Ahmadinejad said Monday. "We decided we were ready and prepared to do this to support the Iraqi people."

The Iranian president, in a subdued mood after the previous night's raucous anti-American rally in a Dubai soccer stadium, repeated his calls for the United States to leave the Gulf region. Washington holds military bases in all Gulf countries except Saudi Arabia.

In stark contrast to Cheney's low-key visit, Ahmadinejad was greeted with fanfare by the top leaders of the Emirates, who apparently had no objection to Sunday's rally.

Ahmadinejad said relations with the Emirates had taken a "quantum leap," with the two countries agreeing to create a joint committee headed by their foreign ministers to boost cooperation in tourism, trade, energy and development.

"There's a willingness on both sides to upgrade relations," he said. "Relations between Iran and the UAE can be a model for all the countries of the region."

Ahmadinejad appeared to be pushing his agenda at a time when the U.S. administration's popularity in the region is at a low point. He said Iran is ready to band together in a Gulf-wide security alliance with Washington's traditional regional allies.

He also called for the reestablishment of diplomatic relations with Egypt that were broken in 1979, saying it would strengthen regional security and stability.

The U.S. presence in the Gulf, Ahmadinejad said, runs counter to the best interests of the Muslim-majority countries on both sides of the oil-rich sea. Similar pleas for a regional security alliance have come during recent visits by Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki and national security adviser Ali Larijani...

One thing to note here is this... the US is not the only people interested in containing Iran, in fact a number of Arab nations are also interested in this, but is the US playing a dangerous game by trying to align itself with these Arab nations against Iran?

There are a few arab nations notably Egypt, Jordan and Saudi Arabia who are famous for their anti-Iran stance. There are a few reasons for this.

1. Racism. Arabs don't like Persians.
2. Sectarianism. Extremist Sunnis don't like Shiites.
3. US influence. Countries like Jordan and Saudi in particular are known to be American puppets in the middle east. Hence they inherit there anti-Iran tendencies from US foreign policy.

I was not aware of a racist issue there. Perhaps we need to examine that closer in the Culture & Traditions Board.

US to push for new Iran sanctions

The US says it will press for a new set of sanctions on Iran for defying UN demands to stop enriching uranium.

Okay, so here we go with the sanctions talk again. Remember the prewar Iraq Thread? Here we had Saddam saying he did not have WMD and there was all these sanctions.

Now, here you have a leader enriching uranium regularly and openly defying any opposition and everyone takes the same route again - sanctions? What does sanctions really do? Can the Iranian people be demoralized?

U.S. navy begins war games on Iran's doorstep
24 May 2007 13:13:57 GMT

By Mohammed Abbas

MANAMA, May 24 (Reuters) - The U.S. navy began war games on Iran's doorstep on Thursday, navy officials said, a day after a large flotilla of U.S. ships entered the Gulf in a dramatic daytime show of military muscle.

The group includes two nuclear-powered aircraft carriers, whose presence adds to the pressure on the Islamic Republic to abandon its own nuclear ambitions, which the West says are an attempt to develop atomic weapons.

Iran, already under U.N. sanctions for enriching uranium, says its plans are for energy purposes only.

I read about this yesterday, and was just shocked. What is going on "behind the scenes" in the U.S. government?! This is "tweaking" Iran in a big way, and no doubt or confusion about it. Why are they poking the hornet's nest? It makes no sense to me whatever.

Exactly, the sanctions don't do anything. They need to get rid of that President whose thinking is a danger to humankind. We have discussed his twisted mind on this forum.

I think Iran enriching uranium regularly is extremely dangerous. Something serious must be done about it.
