Secretary of State John Kerry on Tuesday said he will consult with President Obama and Congress about a possible extension of nuclear talks with Iran ahead of the July 20 deadline for a deal in which Iran would forgo the means to make nuclear weapons in exchange for elimination of economic sanctions. A U.S. Military charter aircraft flying from Afghanistan to Dubai was ordered to land Friday in Iran, a U.S. Official told USA TODAY. The official, who asked not to be named because he wasn't authorized to discuss the issue, described the incident as a misunderstanding that would be resolved soon. President Barack Obama today promised to veto a plan by members of Congress to issue additional sanctions on Iran while diplomatic negotiations regarding Iran's nuclear plan are underway.
"I will veto a bill that comes to my desk and I will make this argument to the American people as to why I'm doing so," Obama said at a joint press conference with United Kingdom Prime Minister David Cameron, referencing a plan supported by some in his own party to increase sanctions on Iran through Congress before a deal is reached by international negotiators.
"My main message to Congress at this point is just hold your fire. Nobody around the world, least of all the Iranians, doubt my ability to get additional sanctions passed if these negotiations fail," Obama added later.
Obama's remarks came soon after Secretary of State John Kerry met with Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif in Paris. Ref. CNN
