Russia loves tanks.
If you have a dream and the money to do it wouldn't you try to bring it back?
One of the richest men in Europe if not the richest man in the world is Putin. He has 40 Billion easily under his belt and more importantly - power!
He has a lot of money thanks to oil to bring his dreams to fruition. What are some of his dreams? Given his background as a KGB agent and his disgust at fallen Russia I will say he wants the 'good ole times to come back'.

Russia's recent foray into Georgia didnt help there image much and actually hurt them on a couple of key things that they actually had going their way. Poland now has signed up for the missle defense shield and one of the keys to the signing was a promise of an even faster than the UN response should Russia attack Poland. This had been at a impasse for over a year and a half as Russia made verbal threats and condemantion of the shields ability. However, less than 1 week after the invasion of Georgia, Poland signed and for a lot less things than they were asking for originally.
I guess I wouldnt call them evil...just more socially inept at this moment. All that cash and they want to buy respect. Creating fear just gets the US more friends in the neighborhood.
Secondly, with Russia's move into Georgia...I can easily see NATO granting expansions in future votes.
