New Study Finds Morning After Pill Can Work as an Abortion Drug

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- A new study published in the medical journal Fertility and Sterility finds that the Plan B drug, known as the morning after pill, can work to cause an abortion of a human being after her life has started. Abortion advocates have claimed the drug only prevents conception but the study appears to contradict that claim. Dr. Rafael T. Mikolajczyk of the School of Public Health at the University of Bielefeld in Germany and Dr. Joseph B. Stanford, who teaches public health at the University of Utah, are the senior authors of the paper. Combining data from multiple studies, they found that levonorgestrel, the drug contained in "emergency contraception," works to prevent the implantation of the developing human being after fertilization occurs. As a result of that process, the developing baby cannot implant into the mother's uterus and complete the rest of the growth and development process that leads to birth. Ultimately, the study found that drug works to make the uterus inhospitable to life and the unborn child dies. The study also found that the Plan B pill was only 8%-49% effective depending on the amount of delay in using it. When used immediately, it was 49 percent effective in preventing conception but that dropped to 8 percent if the user of the drug waits until 72 hours after intercourse.

The precise mechanism of the EMergency Contraceptive Pill is still not quite known. It works by creating a hostile environment for Sperm in the cervix. However it may also work by preventing implantation of a fertilised egg.

So if we assume that it is indeed the case that the Emergency Contraceptive Pill can work by preventing implantation of a fertilised egg the moral issues boil down to 2 points.

1. If you consider the fertilised egg before implantation is an entity deserving of full human rights then there is a chance that the morning after pill = abortion.

2. If you do not consider the fertilised egg before implantation as an entity enjoying full human rights then there is no problem.

Personally I would choose option 2.

The argument that contraception promotion causes irresponsible sexual behaviour is a baseless argument. In my view abstinence as a method of sexual education will fail and there is plenty of scientific literature to back my claim. Sexual education MUST include contraception awareness.

My religious beliefs go absolutely against this. I firmly believe in abstinence until marriage and I think should be the way we should teach our children, by giving them condoms we are encouraging a behavior that we know our young children are not ready for. Sexual intimacy carries a lot of responsibilities and consequence that a teen (no matter how smart) is really ready to face.

The morning after pill is an abortive pill (that's the purpose of it) so I do not agree with its use.

So you choose option 1 which means you consider the fertilised Ovum before implantation as a life. Question is why?

This another debate for another topic. But I will quickly say that I disagree with abstinence before marriage for absolutely everyone. I think it is pretty clear that this does not apply to every single individual in society especially in the west. Sexual intimacy is indeed a major step. Sexual abstinence is not the answer though and perhaps we can discuss this elsewhere.

No particularly. The morning after pill is nothing but a chemical abortion. It's purpose is what I am mostly against. I have mixed feelings about contraceptives in general but I do not consider (despite the reports) the morning after pill as a contraceptive method since if the woman does become pregnant, the pregnancy will be terminated if the pill is used.

Rather off topic, but...
I am surprised by your views on abstinence until marriage knowing your Muslim background. We have several threads about abstinence, you may want to do a search and add your views.

I see, so you see the termination of pregnancy as immoral. However I do not consider the period between conception and implantation as pregnancy. I define pregnancy as the carrying of a clearly defined individual embryo. I have several scientific and religious reasons for this. Here are a couple.

1. Many (if I remember correctly about half) Fertilised Embryos will fail to implant during this period. Hence the processes of Pregnancy cannot be considered to have started as the embryo is not clearly set in stone.

2. During this period the embryo may divide to form an identical twin. Hence it cannot be said for sure which individual the mother is carrying yet.

Therefore I believe it cannot be said that pregnancy has started yet.
