JB,
What I meant was there was concern that the rumor of uprising might be a ploy by Saddam to lure the Brits in.
Turns out it was not a hoax. Many residents of Basra have started fighting with the Baath, who began directing mortar fire against the people yesterday- in the city!
The Brits responded with heavy artillery and call in an air strike. They dropped a thousand pounder on the Baath headquarters and levelled it.
The SAS staged a commando raid on the leader of the Baath party last night in Az-Zubayr (in Basra). They stormed the place, typical SAS style, killed every mother's son in there (the soldiers) and took the local leader of the Baath party hostage.
Those boys don't play.
Fireduck,
Thanks.
To try and answer your question about how the Iraqi people will feel, they will both be relieved that Saddam is gone and still have great resentment of the US.
This is just one more chapter in a 500 year history of "infidel" invasion of their country. It hasn't been that long, you know when they were ruled by the Brits. They managed to kick them out early last century (20th), and now they are back again.
I mean, you start with the "crusaders" coming in with their own "jihad", then the colonialists, then the oil companies, then the Brits dump the Israelis on them with some bogus, 2000 year old claim to Jerusalem, then France, Britain and the US again with all their incompetant manuevering and complete ignorance of the people and culture (not to mention the condescending attitude for the "barbarian camel drivers").
They have no reason to trust any of us.
Leave them in peace! that's what this people need! PEACE!!!!
As a Stranger mentioned before they had so many 'invasions' before, they are fed up of it. One day those big countries who think they can oppress the small ones and do whatever they want, will pay the price for it.

Leave them in peace? That will never happen, LDS.
The only way to accomplish that is to become like my favorite of all people, the Celts, who had NO form of government whatsoever for many centuries.
The moment you form a governmental body with any power and authority over anybody, there begins an inevitable march towards the acquisition of more power and authority and domination.
And the organizations to enforce that authority; police, armed forces, etc.
But you are right, the time of payback comes to all nations who conquer.
You know what bothers me the most about all this? is who or whom are the ones who decide whether a country's government is good or not or whether the President should be there or not?. Think about it. It's crazy. Think what will happen if all the nations of the world turn against the USA at this present time, to the point of send armies and start a new war against the US. I know it may sound almost comical, but let's imagine what would happen....they will get a taste of how people really feel!

Blair is worried now because he is seeing a hint of British history in what the US is trying to do.
Don't think that Iraq will be a walkover even if the US abd UK win, already they see disagreements:

I was just thinking...
The new regime that Bush proposes for Iraq will be chance already be US citizens? Hmmm.... this means in fact that the US will really be running Iraq.
Countries that have fanatics running it for so long will not allow this new government to just take over so easily. There will be lots of assassination attempts I am sure.

JB,
On the assassination theme. No problem there. We assassinate our own presidents on a regular basis. It's a healthy way to let off steam. Besides, what do you think we have Delta Force for?
Of course the US will be running Iraq. What do you think France and Russia are apoleptic about?
Oh I'm sure the Brits are having bad old memories right about now. They gor run out of Iraq, if you remember.
Concerning the "walkover", it already is a walkover. I don't think people are paying attention to what's going on. The only thing even remotely slowing them down is the weather.
Give me a break JB. These guys are attacking Bradley's with Toyota pickups. One genius fired a rocket launcher at a Bradley and was so close the impact blew him up.
The Republican Guard sent 3,000 AVs out of Basra yesterday. They lasted about twenty minutes.
Most of what I am seeing out of mainstream media is coverage that is desperately hoping the US will wind up with egg on its face or better yet, a defeat. Therefore, everytime the Iraquis manage to even disable a Bradley, it becomes "fierce fighting".
Baloney. Every engagement so far has wound up with the Iraquis wiped out in a couple hours and no coalition losses. that is fierce fighting? Get real. We have killed more of our own troops through friendly fire and chopper crashes than the Iraquis have managed.
Let's take a reality check here.

You know when I saw that I thought, 'they are going to war with a 4 door pickup?' I am suprised that the media did not comment on that, BUT we must be forgiving of their military in this case, there were so many restrictions on them that it would be very difficult for him to get good thanks, etc so we cannot blamed them for being ill equipped.
