JB,
That was directed at LDS, not you.

Yes, I heard about the car bomb. Hamas has snuck in there now, so it's going to get really nasty. I suppose we're going to have to send F-16s right down the Gaza Strip.

I don't get cranky, my friend, I get really depressed about it. I think I really should refrain from these types of discussions, because I am always led back to my thoughts about reactivating The Monroe Doctrine.

And that is true. We cannot go into the city without the innocent getting hurt. We can't do it without our own boys getting hurt. That type of combat is particularly lethal.

Remember Somalia? Very bad business. Anybody that thinks we like doing that is out of their minds. It looks good in the movies, but believe me, nobody on the ground is havng any fun at all.

But I ask myself, what are we to do? To accomplish what the gentle souls like LDS want, we have to first convince the Saddams, the Pol Pots, the Stalins, the Maos and all the rest of those guys. It's not us, the US, that you have to convince.

We are perfectly happy staying over here and wallowing in our decadent capitalism.

You know it occured to me that the US doesn't need war to exert its influence in the world. It is not our preferred modus operandi.

We have enough economic clout that we do quite well in that arena, and by far prefer to operate using business and finance. It is a misconception that we are warmongers. Americans like being wheeler-dealers in the world of high finance.

We generally are compelled to get into these things by those who ARE the warmongers, and that is what the rest of the world refuses to see.

I can't think of anything we've gotten out of any engagement we've ever been in except the dead bodies of our soldiers.

It was a relatively 'safe' world then during the past 8 years of Democratic administration simply for the above reason. Until a warmongering Bush came along ...... his shortcut to high finance is WAR!  :-[

Fireduck I was a bit confused as to what you were talking about until I realised you were quoting Stranger. May I suggest the 'quote' tags. Please see the help section on how to use them. That way we can know what is your text and what you are quoting. Thanks.

With regards to the war, I believe the US is suprised with hard liners in Saddam army, they did not expect such a stance from them. Something that the US is not used to dealing with is terrorists tatics. Who knows, they may bring over some Israeli commandos to blend in and take a few out?

I wonder where Saddam is... we have not seen him for a few days... neither Saddam or his twins smile.gif

Actually, we have been preparing for terrorists and their methods since the early eighties. There is a unit called Delta Force, that officially didn't exist for almost twenty years, whose sole mission is to deal with them.

And their methods of hit and run along the supply lines is classical warfare. That is how Hannibal was defeated.

But I LOVE your idea about bringing the Israelis in. They burned the Geneva Convention long ago, and if there is one thing all Arabs fear, it is the Israelis.

I too, have wondered about where Saddam is. Very uncharacteristic of him.

I think the planners were surprised. In '91, even the Rebublican Guard caved in quickly. Now they are showing more fight.

It's too bad really. Those poor guys are just guys like us, and all that's going to happen is, CentCom is going to pause, secure the flanks and the weak points, bring more troops in while continuing the air assault, then kill a whole lot more soldiers than they originally planned.

I thought the US still denies the existence of a 'Delta Force'. By the way, this was made popular with Chuck Norris.  :rifle

Fear them? I think they abhor them.

Lets talk about that scene where they were distributing the food. I could not understand why the soldiers could not get the people to be orderly. There were not much of them and they could have said, we are not giving any food until you for a line. The guys who were giving out the food seemed whacked. They were throwing out the food like it was bags of cement.

Who knows maybe Saddam is in a tropical island at this time, enjoying himself..do you all think he still in Iraq?? I don't think so.  About JB's comments about the distribution of food in the beginning I thought the same thing but if you watch carefully the tape you will see that the iraqis were out of control, it was very hard for those few soldiers to handle them, they even started to fight with each other for a box of food. Really sad. So I don't think that the technique of keep a line to distribute food would work really.

JB, sorry for the 'confusing' post. I'm still learning. Or rather, I know you would be smart enough to catch that. wink.gif

Just read about how much the Rumsfeld is asking from Congress for the war effort. $74 billion! And Homeland Security will get $3.5 bil to beef up security at airports, etc. Just imagine if they spend a bit more (which may be just a fraction of the $74 bil) on Homeland security, the US can be turned into a fortress! And Saddam being such a distance away will definitely not be able to whack the US when this 'fortress' is put in place. And at a fraction of the costs of getting rid of him.

So, who are they kidding about not being interested in the oil of Iraq? If not, at the very least, it must be fighting for the Israelis. I think the Bush Admin should at least let his taxpayers know the true objectives of this exercise. Maybe the President of the USA is just a pawn or a stooge of Sharon Ariel?

Just some updates and of course my thoughts...

From CNN:

A CHILLING DISCOVERY

Nasiriya Name tags and U.S. flag patches ripped off Also found: An apparent
torture device made of a metal cot and a car battery 2 Marines killed in

Well this answers my last thread about nothing happening in Israel...

From CNN:

SUICIDE BOMBER WOUNDS AT LEAST 30 IN ISRAEL

A suicide bomber detonated an explosion that left at least 30 people injured
-- four seriously -- at a busy cafe Sunday afternoon in this northern Israeli
coastal town, according to Israeli police and ambulance services.

In answer to my last question about attacking Baghdad and leaving the civilians intact it seems this is the answer...

From Deseret News:

LONG SIEGE OF BAGHDAD IS POSSIBLE
In many ways, Saddam Hussein's Iraqi forces have fought an unconventional battle
that is setting up a strategic showdown both sides now seem to expect: A siege
of Baghdad. The Iraqis surrendered the deserts and took to the cities. They
avoided the front and attacked the rear.
