Here is some of the latest, including one article that says this war will bring greater peace?
From Deseret News:
ISRAELI LINKS WAR, PEACE
The war in Iraq will open windows of opportunity that could be the genesis of
lasting peace in the Middle East.

From ABC News:
The Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said the Republican Guard forces
have been taking a pounding in the air and are being pressured on the
ground. U.S. and British forces, he says, are positioned in the north,
south and west of Baghdad. In Rumsfeld's words: "The circle is closing."

The Republican Guard is the core of the Iraqi Army. They are the units whose commanders are close to Hussein, known to be loyal to him, thus get the best equipment, training and pay.
Their logistical position has always been close to Baghdad, thus forming a protective ring around Hussein himself.
The main military forces are conscripts, "draftees", if you will, stationed in logical positions throughout the country. Their task is to take the first assaults of an incoming force, slow, delay and hopefully weaken them.
On a new development. I believe I mentioned to Fireduck yesterday that our Special Forces were "bad news". The rescue of Pvt Lynch proved that and underlined it in red.
Although details are classified, we know a couple of things. They were Navy Seals, Rangers and Marines.
The Seals infiltrated without being detected. The Marines assaulted GHQ in a surprise diversionary attack.
The Seals, hit the hospital, took out all "resistance" within a matter of seconds, grabbed her and eleven bodies and were gone within "a matter of minutes".
"Now you see them, now you're dead, now they're gone".
As a parting gift to the Iraqis, they destroyed their CNC (command and control) post and whoever happened to be unlucky enough to be hanging around.
What stunned me about the Op was the fact thay they were able to extract a wounded soldier who had two broken legs and eleven bodies "in a matter of minutes".
JB,
That was an interesting article. Overly optimistic in my opinion. The US is going to have to take a crash course in the Arab people, culture and how to deal with them for it to work.

Yes, I will give you that... they know what they are doing in that realm.
:rifle The coalition forces are only 30km from Baghdad. What do you think? Will we see similar battles as we did before, or will we see real blood on both sides when they actually get there?

JB,
There's a good chance we'll see blood on both sides.
The Repulican Guard has their back to the wall now, and the US has made it clear that they intend to wipe them out.
However, their track record against our guys isn't too good, so I don't expect heavy casualties from our guys. If they get some of them, it will be due to a tactical error, dumb mistake that one of the guys on the ground makes.
For instance, last time around, the kill ratio of tanks was something like 1240 to 0.
We lost our first tanks to them this go around. So far we've lost two.
I know one Marine tank officer that in Desert Storm was on patrol with 7 tanks. He ran up on 70 Iraqi tanks that jumped them. They took out all 70 of the Iraqis and lost no tanks.
These men are HIGHLY trained and very motivated.
Hi I am brand spanking new. I say Bush is going to live to regret this day he began this ILLEGALA war agains Iraq. He is only out for one thing and that is to reap the wealth from Iraq. IF you look at History and the history of the Middleeast you will see a clear pattern. A pattern of colonialism and iperialis

Last night the BBC was talking about this and mentioned that the Iraqi tanks were from the early 70's and 80's and that they were no match for the current sophisticated weaponry and armor of the current divisions.
