[quote]JB,
I know one Marine tank officer that in Desert Storm was on patrol with 7 tanks. He ran up on 70 Iraqi tanks that jumped them. They took out all 70 of the Iraqis and lost no tanks.
These men are HIGHLY trained and very motivated.[/quote]
They have learned a thing or two from Chuck Norris, haven't they?
But seriously, the Iraqis are under-armed and fighting with antiquated equipment. If it is a war against N. Korea or China I think the ratio may go either way. ;D
Well I have some good stuf for you on the war, all be it biased in some regards, but it is useful information for our discussion. First the latest updates:
From CNN:
PUSHING TO BAGHDAD
Central Command spokesman: U.S. forces "in the vicinity" of Baghdad; some
Iraqi reinforcements arriving Spokesman says Special Forces went into "command
and control locations," including one palace Army, Marines now north of both

'AL-JAZEERA' MORE POPULAR THAN 'SEX'

What I do not understand is how they continually get up each press conference making it sound like they have huge tanks and soldiers mashing up the coalition forces. What do they expect to achieve? They are just trying to keep up morale? Give them enought time to leave Baghdad? Maybe they have an underground system to another part of Iraq? Who knows, it is all spekulation.
I found a site that goes through the reasons why the Arabs hates the west.
It starts with these early years and continues:
1779: Britain's East India Company, backed by British military power, establishes control over Kuwait.
1798: French troops led by Napoleon invade and occupy Egypt for three years.
1820: Britain establishes control over part of the Gulf coast.
1830: France invades Algeria. Resistance movement led by Abd el Kader erupts.

Fireduck,
If you believe that, grab a rifle and go after them, brother. There seems to be a world-wide wish and long held hope that the US will fail. Every time something happens, everyone around the globe seems to be thinking, "good, maybe they're going to get their butts kicked this time".
JB,
That information about colonialism is SO relevant. I have used that many times in discussions to try and point out how we need to rethink our interactions with the Arab world.
By the way, you left out the Crusades, the christian "jihads".
[offtopic]Still haven't figured out where your reply went to.[/offtopic]

My understanding of "Jihad" is not war in the sense the zealots use it, but more of a war on one's soul. The war an individual has each day with choosing good, not a killing spree. Please see the 'Religions and Traditions' board on this forum - there is several threads there about these issues that you may like to contribute to. For sure the 'Crusaders' were the WORST in history! They used the sword to force a belief system on people in the name of God, but that is another topic.
[offtopic]Stranger... I do not know what is up with your email. I have sent you many things before by email and it seems to not have arrived. You may want to check on that.[/offtopic]

Picky, picky.
Regardless of the actual 'denotation' of the word, the fact remains that our (and by our I mean the entire western world) interactions with the Arab world have been deplorable, that EVERY country has treated them with contempt, and it is with good cause that they do not like westerners in general.
The current trend of laying it off on the US doesn't fly. The Brits and the French were at it long before we were even a country.

I have a good one for you. Yesterday al-Sahhaf (Minister of Information) said that the coalition troops ringing Baghdad was an "illusion".
I almost fell out of my chair laughing.

Its not a matter of being picky, but we must see that this word is being used in its wrong context constantly, especially by the muslims that crave war.

Well why the heck do we keep bothering them then? It has to be a religious or racial issue then? Or is it that everyone else is just jealous about them having all the oil?

Well maybe he decided to say something that was accurate for once.
