Dual Citizenship?

Do you feel a citizen should be allowed to hold dual citizenship? Dual citizenship is when a person has the full rights of the country for which they have been declared a 'citizen'? The benefits derived from this are obvious, but many look at what may be a loss of loyalty to one country. Others see how such a thing can be used for criminal activities or as an escape route if they commit a grievous crime in one country.

Citizenship Dual

I am for dual citizenship. Case in point. I was born in the US, but my mother and most of her family are Trinidad citizens. I lived in Trinidad from the ages of 4-16, and moved back to the US afterwards. I would love to become a Trinidad citizen so I can go back when I please and for how long I please, but unfortunately, the US does not allow for this. Are there cases where malicious activity can arise out of dual citizenship; maybe. But I think the pros would outweigh the cons.

Dual Citizenship? History & Civil Business Politics

I guess that the US does now allow dual citizenship. My wife recently took her oath and became a citizen of the US, but is still considered a British subject as well, with all the rights associated. So, if something happened and she wanted to return to England, she would be easily able to do so, while retaining her US citizenship.

I think it is an excellent system.

Citizenship Dual

Grouptt, yes they do.

Nighthawk, isn't it true that although the UK may recognize both citizenships that as far as the US is concerned once you are a US citizen you are only a citizen of the US since they have no policy concerning dual citizenship?

Dual Citizenship?

I just looked it up on the US State Department. Dual nationality is allowed, based on the laws of the original country.

QUOTE
U.S. law does not mention dual nationality or require a person to choose one citizenship or another. Also, a person who is automatically granted another citizenship does not risk losing U.S. citizenship. However, a person who acquires a foreign citizenship by applying for it may lose U.S. citizenship. In order to lose U.S. citizenship, the law requires that the person must apply for the foreign citizenship voluntarily, by free choice, and with the intention to give up U.S. citizenship.

Dual Citizenship

Well basically those statements are in fact saying that the US has no problem with a person having two citizenships but it only recognizes one (the US one) since the dual citizenship is based on the laws of the country of origin.
