A Florida professor admitted Tuesday he had been a Cuban spy for nearly 30 years, and his wife -- also a professor -- admitted she knew of his conduct, authorities said.

This really shouldn't be that shocking. During the Clinton Administration, it was later found out that a award for government service was given to a spy. The vatican nearly made a new Archbishop of Warsaw that turned out to be a spy for several decades.

I know a couple of people that have been approached by the US government to act as spies. It seems like they are in demand as the US keeps a tab on things.

That doesn't surprise me in the least. One of the key findings from 9/11 was that we were relying on too much electronic evidence and there were not enough human evidence (spies) to make decisions. There was a huge buildup of human surveilence (spies) as a result. We have been spying on Cuba for almost ever and they have been spying on us for about the same amout of time.

While the author is extremely biased, there is a interesting table of spies that have been captured in the US and sentenced. The list of countries is probably a bit of a eye opener. I guarantee that the US has spies in just about every country, so I am not being judgemental.
