Starting A Mormon Colony
If you were placed into a situation (because of war / global catastrophe, etc) where you had no contact from human civilization for a long time will you as a Priesthood holder try to start a Mormon Colony with survivors even if the survivors are not all Mormons? What if you are not a Priesthood holder will you attempt to be as Deborah of the Old Testament? Consider... Will you take the role as leader? How will you manage government, etc.? Will you attempt direct revelation from God? This Thread could really grow big with ideas.
If there is no one with the Priesthood in your group, then I say you can have worship services, read from the Scriptures, and everything else that does NOT require the Priesthood, things that do require the Priesthood, like sacrament, you DON"T do, no matter how long it is, weeks, months, even years, you can't just "elect" your Bishop, or the Priesthood.
If I were that isolated I would go into a mountain like the prophets did and see if Heavenly Father will guide me to other leaders since I know that there will always be one of the twelve apostles still on earth.
Personally, in the first months I would not bring any attention to it until I either:
1. Was instructed by someone of higher authority
2. Received information divinely to do something
Longer than months I cannot say, I've learned that you just do not know what you will do in certain situations until it happens to you.
Name: Will
Comments: I don't understand why we'd even ask hypotheticals like that. That will not happen. That is not in His program.
No. Priesthood keys were and are never transferred to ANYONE by default just because those who held them are not around anymore.
I did not receive the keys of the Aaronic Priesthood (which the bishop holds) when I was set apart as a priest. Likewise at that time I had no authority to bless or administer the sacrament or perform any ordinances without those keys authorizing the use of the Priesthood.
This is of interest to me because I am looking to eventually work internationally in countries where there are few if any branches. I will need to contact the branch president (or district president if there is none), and let him know what is happening. He will receive inspiration for what to do if you are the only Priesthood holder or if your group does not have keys- usually either create a group or give permission to bless the sacrament weekly and hold Sunday school classes.
But by the Lord's pattern under no circumstances is anyone without Priesthood keys to assume Priesthood leadership responsibilities without them.
