That's a really nice cut, and very popular around here. I think it would look really pretty on you, because your face is oval and would take the layers very nicely.
The other thing that's very popular is dying the hair two different colors - the lower layers darker, and the upper layers lighter. Some folks take it to extremes, though.

The thing with any hairstyle is that you have to be taught how to keep it at home. I'm sure with these layers you would have to blow dry with a big round brush. Can you commit to that every day ? Go for it, girl!
I'm not brave enough for that "highlight/lowlight" look, either. Actually, I don't really like it. It's always been my opinion that hairstyles/haircolor should look natural, not fake.
I am going to the hairdresser tomorrow for a total change of look, I cannot carry these pictures with me to show her so I need a little help describing the name of the hairstyle and the color of the highlights so I can relate it to the hairdresser:
1. This is the hairstyle I want (picture on the left, Jessica Alba), is it layered? How do I describe it?:

2. The highlights (picture on the right, Jessica Alba, same link). How to describe the highlights?
Any help is appreciated!
