Your Worst Model Experience

Has there ever been a modeling related experience that you had in your past that caused you to say...

"I'll never do that again!"

Let me start by sharing with you some of my experience.

One thing I have found is that most models and photographers are not ethical in their business practices or should I say, "Do not have business minds"

Many times we have tried to do business with a model or photographer and found that their attitude was one of 'I'm too hot' for you. I believe the underlying cause of modeling is money. Money needs to be made. Most models will tell you that. Photographers differ, but at the same time will not do work for free - so it is money for them too. Anyways, in one experience I had...

We set up a deal for a model where she and the photographer woul give us photos of herself in exchange for a site. The model agrees, and so does the photographer, and in this case the photographer even sent a signed document to release the photograph to us. BUT then the model wanted us to only have certain photographs (the ones that did not look good). She was rude and not timely at all.

I stopped doing exchanges because of this. When people pay for design they are actually easy to work with and more appreciative of your time.

I remember that one. I didn't have any bad experiences yet, hope to never have one, but that's impossible.
I think the big problems models face in this career are weirdos. Too many of them around, if you're not careful and smart enough you can fall by their tricks, some of them are really 'profesional' on lies and things like that.

My worst experience happened this past May. I needed to update my portfolio images and a friend of mine that runs an agency here in my city recommended one of the photographers her models had used in the past for various promo shoots. When I met with him, I let him know that I could provide my own make-up/hairstylist if needed, he said that it wouldn't be necessary, we would use his. When I arrived on the day of the shoot, he had NO make-up artist or hairstylist, luckily I had done a little bit of it myself that morning. I went ahead and did the shoot, but needless to say, I didn't use many of the images...I think I've used 6 of the images (total) from what was an all day shoot.

I have often found people (generally) in this industry to be less than honest or upfront in their dealings. If he knew that he could not provide a makeup artist why not just tell you so before you get there :

Luckily so far I haven't had any bad experiences....maybe some that were a little underwhelming, but nothing I would consider bad. The way I like to approach it is total and upfront communication. Discuss everything beforehand, address every possible question before the day of shooting and that way both parties are on the same page and have the same goal in mind. The results are always much better when everyone's comfortable and happy!  :)

I don't know if this is so much a bad experince, as it is simply annoying and frustrating. I was visiting a friend of mine in Florida who is the first model I ever shot with. Actually, we kind of got started in this together.

Anyway, as I am from the Midwest, when visiting my friend Lori in Ft. Lauderdale, I really wanted to take advantage of the beach for some photoshoots. Lori and I and I did an awesome shoot there one morning. Morning seemed the best because of the sun coming up over the water.

She recommended that I get with one of the local modeling agencies to see if any of the girls there would care to shoot with me. The agency was pretty short with me over the phone, but after I came in and showed them my portfolio, they could not wait to start calling girls to shoot with me. I was really excited.

The first girl I talked to sounded great. But, then she never called me again to confirm anything. The second girl I met with over lunch. We had a great meeting made plans for Thursday morning.

The third girl I talked to was really excited and we made plans for the next morning (Wednesday). Well, I get there and she never showed. The agency had a long list of other girls that I could have called, but I did not because I had plans with this girl on Wednesday. Unfortunatly, I did not have an more time and had to return to Illinois.

I guess I am just annoyed because I had a very limited time frame to do anything with and I lost one of my days because someone else failed to show up for their appointment.

The agency was really mad at the girl as well. Especially after the saw the awesome shots of Lori and Tara (the girl from Thursday). Both girls redid their comp cards to incorporate some of my photos. The girl from Wednesday got a negative note in her file at the agency because of the no show.

So, Models, don't think that just because its TFP, you can just blow it off and there's no bad feelings. The agency considered it negative just the same and that will effect their decision in recommending that girl to a paying job.

I have not yet had any bad experiences. I always do research on photographers that are interested in working with me. I ask other models who have worked with them, at least 3 models. I also check out all information that they(photographers) provide to me. So if they say they have a website, i check it out and so on...... I cannot see any models not doing this. There are a lot of weirdos out there! It is also good to contact them periodically from time to time before the shoot. See if they are responsive and serious and ther main focus is photography. If at any time you feel doubtfull, mention that you will be accompanied with a FAMILY member. If they find that disturbing.....any doubt felt can be right. You have to be firm and let them know exactly what you want. Never show that you are uneasy or have no actual ideas of what it is you want to achieve in a shoot. Be the boss when they contact you.....let them know you are aware and experienced in dealings with photographers even if you do not have much experience.
