I think this article could also be an indicator as to poor house keeping by parents and not teaching little one what hot means.

We have these devices in my house but never never are they left down where a little one could get a hold of it. If it is hot why would it not be place in a spot that a toddler can not reach it? I also found that if we showed our children what the straightener was for they were no longer curious about it and would stay away from it when we told them mom used it and it is hot.

After all when we used to use cast iron wood stove to heat with few children where severely burned by them why they were taught to stay away from it and most likely allowed to help light a fire with the parent every now and then so that they respected the device.

We as parents must make things safe and teach our children to be safe around potential dangerous items. I think this is lacking more and more as standards are raised so as to protect those who do not take positive action to protect themselves. It is a bit of a viscous cycle in some ways.

I hope that this article helps other parents keep hot hair irons up and away from small hands.

I don't get it. Why would a toddler be around a hot iron? I mean you have to be totally irresponsible to leave a lil baby around something that it's hot.

I can tell you that something like this can occur in a house if there are teens in it. My teenager uses a hair straightener and they leave for school with it still plugged in turned on and sitting open on a towel rack within easy reach for a toddler or other young child. Even after telling them to turn it off or put it up higher.

Yes it is amazing how high a toddler can reach if they are very interested in something. We made a safe place for my wife in our bedroom so the door can be closed after and safety knobs were used. A plastic part put on the doorknob that you squeeze hard to get it open.
