Wushu Rpg - Page 2

You are correct of course - I haven't played or run much Superhero stuff so it slipped my mind, but the more freeform and abstract systems, that allow or encourage greater player creativity with characters and actions, do tend to be much more suited to playing Supers, moreso than systems with a tighter leash on actions and what is "believable", etc. In theory, anyone or myself could run a Supers game with this type of system, so I can tentatively add it in as #5, but I've only ran one or two Supers games, about a decade ago, using much different systems, and more short intro inserts, rather than any adventure proper.

I've never played a comic style super hero game fully but I will join in if you create it jpatt. I'd like to see how you do as a GM, I might just cause you some extra trouble sneaky.gif

Well, I've really never ran one either - the only one I did was more just a fight to get used to the rules of DC Heroes, where my neighbor, who took Superman, punched Darkseid, knocking him immediately unconscious, and backward into a derelict building, which then collapsed on him - Superman dug him out and threw him in a wheelbarrow and walked him to the "super police station" just so everybody would see it. We both decided DC Heroes rules were too complicated and power levels were too "all over the place" for us to play.

After looking through my extensive collection of RPG documents, games and supplements, I have just found an actual likely suitable intro supers adventure, in my Superhero folder, so I guess if/when I do decide to go this route, it is available. There are a few things in it that are stumping me, how I would carry out on a forum, such as two teams of opposing players playing a game of keepaway, and other things like that, that seems like would be tedious back-and-forth posting between players and GM, without a whole lot of detail needed and also with the ball moving between people, no one really knowing if they have the ball or not, etc. It is these kinds of things that make adventures hard to run on forums, and so the ones that DO work for forums are even harder to find, than just ANY adventure.

To be honest, I'm not sure if it would be a good idea for me to run a Superhero game as my first game for people here, without you being used to the rules, or me being able to improv and roll with powers and "stunts" with as much far-reaching results and influences possible in supers games. I have definitely ran my share of BAD forum or even tabletop games - not a lot, not as many as good ones, but not too far behind, so I know it's possible, much as I know the rest of you find that hard to believe. =D Still, this seems like it would probably would be mostly doable without a lot of trouble - but again, having not ran a supers game before, it may explode my head when people start doing stuff.

The other thing that isn't necessarily a problem, adapting Wushu to a superhero game, is that superheroes are nearly defined by their specific powers - we all know Superman has super strength, flight, nigh invulnerability, heat vision, x-ray vision, super hearing, super breath, immunity to most diseases, radiation, etc. Wushu's main attribute is that heroes have only a handful of player-defined attributes, with little other stats or rules, to avoid exhaustive lists and detailed record-keeping and such. I'll think about it but I'm just not sure.

It should be cool whatever you decide to do with your system. I like to keep myself in lots of RPG so my activity is also up otherwise I have to start hunting for topics to answer.

Actually I've been thinking it over and the system mechanics I'd use depends on the player preferences.

When I run Wushu forum games, I let the players post their action turns for their characters, and I examine their brief description and assign an appropriate number of dice, equal to the number of embellishments or details in the one action sentence, THEN I plug that character's stats and number of dice rolled into my Wushu dice roller and post the results, the players not having to mess with dice rolling at all.

In the tabletop version, I tell the player how many dice he or she earned, and then he rolls that many, but this would be needlessly tedious and time consuming in a forum, requiring the player to post an action, the GM to post how many dice the player gets, then the player to roll and post the result.

But these players seem to lean more toward more interactivity, rolling their own dice, so I might be more likely using the actual Feng Shui rules that the modern day Hong Kong scenario is in, and adjust success according to the creativity or entertainment value of the posts.

I'm not really sure, but I hear you on keeping busy with multiple games, although that isn't my general practice, as I get confused and forgetful with a LOT of stuff going on, but a couple is manageable, even running one I suppose, though I've never really ran one and played in one at the same time, but I guess you have to start somewhere. I've also always wanted to try a dark sci-fi/horror, but I don't have a particular adventure or feel for that genre, or system for it, and probably still haven't run enough online games to try something like that - just sorta thinking out loud on that one.

But overall, as far as me running a forum game, it's still pretty much:

1) modern action movie in Hong Kong w/ mystical elements
2) modern Survivor-type starting bit w/ "horror" elements
3) 1920's horror investigation of an island estate
4) any of various fantasy-themed adventures and/or "sandboxes"
5) modern intro superhero adventure set in Freedom City

I've ran 1 a number of times on and offline, to good response. I've run 2 once online to slightly above average response, with the players liking the ability to make in-depth character posts as part of the story, but that seems to be the routine here so that might not speak for much. I've run 3 twice, tabletop, to solid engagement in the story and play, but no particularly extraordinary response. I've run a number of 4-type fantasy games on and offline, to varying results and enjoyment, depending on the adventure, my incentive, and the players - fantasy seems to be generally a "standard" choice, if having a tendency to be unremarkable for a lot of people. I have never run more than a few minutes of a 5, and have only played in part of one session and only made a couple characters for one, using a very complicated system.

You're the only person responding here, and I don't know what people would be most interested in playing, or if they'd want a more serious, involved style, or more light and maybe even humorous, etc.

Site's big so I don't think people even know you're asking anything here. You might have to like visit the known players here and ask them to respond and see if they want to get invoved or what. For me...

1. Not my style
2. Maybe depends on what kind of character you can have
3. Nah not far back enough for me
4. We have plenty of that already
5. Never tried that before sounds cool
