Title: Janet Barreto case
Comments: About 5-6 years ago I responded to an ad in a Memphis newspaper regarding the sale of a cock-a-poo puppy - which I had been searching for. There was a phone no. And I called. The lady who answered said she was Jan Barreto and she answered my questions relating to the advertised puppy. She said it would be about 2 weeks and the puppy would be ready. On the date agreed, my grand-daughter and I drove from Tunica, MS to New Albany, MS to get our new puppy. When we arrived in New Albany - we could not find Jan's location so I called her. She said we needed to meet at a service station and she would bring the puppy. The place she suggested was an old run-down, closed station and looked really spooky. Thank goodness it was daylight. We waited and finally a beaten-up truck pulled up and there were 2 people inside. What appeared to be a Mexican man, young and dark-skinned and a young girl - about 15-16 years old who also appeared to be Mexican. The girl was not Jan. I slowly got out of my vehicle and told my grand-daughter to stay inside. I walked over to the truck and the girl got out and had the little brown puppy in her hands. We completed the transaction at that point. I paid her $200 in cash - she wrote me a receipt and gave me papers on the puppy and we left. This was a really eerie situation. I have been reading about this case and I suddenly realized that this was the same woman I had been talking to on the phone about this dog. I have always suspected that our cock-a-poo was a puppy mill dog and now I know for sure. My story will not help this case in their capture - but when I think how close my grand-daughter and I came to even being close to such people - it scares me - even now. I hope and pray they are caught.
Carol, wow that was a super close encounter! I'm pretty sure these two are by now living in Mexico and I can only hope Mexican authorities can keep their eyes open so these two can be send to jail immediately and for life.
