Fourth Mission Of The Church?

I'm hearing that the Church is planning to add a Fourth mission besides the well known:

1. Proclaim the Gospel

2. Perfect the Saints

3. Redeem the Dead

Anyone has any information?

Church The Mission Fourth

Somebody on another message board brought this idea up.

I think its just one of those things that you hear at church and wondering if it is true.

I mean we can't even do the three we already have, why add a fourth?

Even more the three that we have cover all the parts of the Plan of Salvation, so adding another one would just be over lap.

What other mission would there be? We are to help the members, nonmembers and the dead. That covers everyone.

Church The Mission Fourth

Name: Phil

Comments: The fourth mission or more specifically "purpose" of the Church has been unofficially proposed by general authorities in various training meetings around the world. It was identified as "caring for the poor and the needy". Contrasting - as I see it - with the the three other purposes, this one deals more with a temporal salvation.

Phil I don't get it. I mean the church has been talking about service and taking care of the poor and the needy since its establishment. Why to make it unofficial or official fourth mission?

Fourth Mission The Church

I just found this that I think answers the question:

international QUOTE
Media reports and blog posts earlier this week suggested that "to care for the poor and the needy" would receive elevated emphasis in the next edition of the Church Handbook of Instructions, to be released in 2010. The manual contains directives, responsibilities and information for local and general LDS Church leaders worldwide.

In the upcoming handbook, caring for the poor and the needy will be listed as one of the purposes of the church, along with tenets from its well-recognized three-fold mission - to proclaim Christ's gospel worldwide, to perfect the Saints through their receiving ordinances and instruction en route to gaining exaltation, and to redeem the dead by performing vicarious ordinances for them.
