A place like Greece should not be experiencing any economic difficulties. They have the best resource in their people, their rich culture and history, tourism, food and more. The only barrier might be the language but a lot of people know English.

We have also stupidity and want to get easy money from tourists with overpiced products and low quality services. Sadly, the later years many of the small archeological sites are closed and/or without maintenance. The country has also potential in high-tech research (We have the academics/researchers) but the goverment does not care (No payment, no economic support to build and maintain infrastructure) and many have left for other EU countries or for US/Canada.

The land of my father's parents is not doing well. Much of this stems from Greece adopting the Euro. That made prices rise in an otherwise stable economy and cut deeply into their tourism. Add to that a desire to retire very young and live on their version of social security and pensions and burden that puts on the economy and you can see why they are in this position. I hope they reverse things soon. I hate to see this happening.
