I think she did the right thing by admitting that she used a deadly weapon to kill her mother. I hope that taking account for her own actions lets her learn something while in prison.

Heather D'Aoust, 16, who used a hammer to kill her adopted mother in her Scripps Ranch home has been sentenced to 16 years to life.

That must have been a very violent episode since a hammer is a blunt weapon unless she used the claw side. I have not read the details but let me guess... Either the girl was being abused and retaliated or the girl was disturbed, I hope it is not that the girl simply could not get her way.
